Birtley vs. Chollerton parish?COMPLETE
« on: Wednesday 15 August 07 15:30 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters!  I have an ancestor (Andrew Liddell) who is listed in the IGI as christened in Birtley, NBL; however, in the Whickham parish register for one of his children's birth, it states he is "a native of the parish of Chollerton, NBL."  Could he be one and the same person??  Sorry that my knowledge of parish boundaries is so limited.  :-[  Thank you for any input! Pat,

Nearly everbody's knowledge of parish boundaries is limited because it is "old hat" and today these "ancient" parishes are less relevant.

Get the map of Northumberland Parishes ( from GenUKI web site... www.genuki.org.uk) into your "favourites" and the a-z of parish info will be at your fingertips.

The map shows the Parish of Birtley to be the north-east neighbour of the Parish of Chollerton.

The connected notes inform that Birtley was originally a chapelry within the territory and under the jurisdiction of Chollerton Parish, until it became a parish in it's own right in 1765.

So your man, depending on the era, could have been born in a community within the wider parish of Chollerton, which later found itself within the fledgling Birtley parish area.
