Ellen ELLIOTT of Stiglitch in Victoria

Is there really a place called Stiglitch anywhere? I am researching a family history for a friend and her great grandparents were William Brown and Ellen Elliott who married in Knox Church Dunedin, New Zealand on 27th February 1893. I have asked about Ellen before but have sent for her marriage certificate and here are her details:
Name - Ellen Elliott
Age at marriage - 23
Birthplace - Stiglitch, Victoria, Australia
Parents - William Elliott, miner: Harriet Elliott
Maiden name of mother - Willard or Millard, or Milland, is smudged.
I have seen evidence of another child of William Elliott having been born at Morrison's Diggings, Victoria and the mother of that child was Ellen Gorman.
Can anyone help with Ellen's ancestors, I have heard that William Elliott came from Roxburghshire, Scotland
I look forward to possibly hearing something about any of these people.

The maiden surname of Harriet(t)/Harriet(t) Emily is shown in the index as MILLARD for each of the births of the 7 children (and as Harriet Unknown for the death of Louisa, aged 4, in 1881).

Harriet's death is recorded as:
Elliott Harriet Emily Millet, age 38, parents unknown, born England, died 1880, #11034

I cannot see a marriage for a William ELLIOTT & a Harriet.

the only mention of Roxburghshire, as I recall, was in relation to the marriage of a William ELLIOTT & an Annabella CAMERON.  But these people do not seem to be connected to you?

We have William ELLIOTT & Ellen/Helen GORMAN marrying in 1858, and having children (including your Ellen's probably half-brother William b 1863) between 1859 and 1863; and Ellen (GORMAN) ELLIOTT dying in 1865.

We have a William ELLIOTT (b Roxburgh) & an Annabella CAMERON (b Antrim) marrying in 1866 and having children between 1866 and 1874.  Annabella died in 1908.

Now we learn that your Ellen's parents were William ELLIOTT & Harriet MILLARD.  They had children (see OzyBob's list) between 1869 and 1879.
So unless William was running two households  , the William ELLIOTT who married Annabella CAMERON must have been a different chap i.e. not your Ellen's father.

The' infant' is in the right time frame to be 38 at death in 1880.

The group is on Lord Durham in 1842.

The father is Henry.

Another possibility might be Harriet MILLARD, age 12, who came (unassisted) on the 'Marion Moore' in 1853, Port B, Fiche 030, Page 2.

Harriet's death certificate (see earlier) might help e.g. if it shows whether William is still alive or not, and if it indicates when and where she was married (if they did marry), and how long she'd been in Victoria.

And the 1858 marriage cert of William ELLIOTT & Ellen GORMAN (see other thread for details) might help by giving the name and occupation of William's father ...

The birth certificate of any of the children will show William & Harriet's ages and birthplaces, also William's occupation and previous children.  It will also say when and where they married.

Bear in mind that this couple may have actually emigrated, met and married in NZ, and, after Harriet's death, William returned there to relatives.  I can see no evidence of any of his children's deaths in Victoria and daughter Ellen married in NZ in 1893.
