Advice regarding NSW address please?

Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance, also I am not sure how to word this topic, but here goes!

I sent a letter back in April of this year to someone who I believe may be related to my great, great uncle.  I found the address on whitepages.com.au.  I received my original letter back last week with a "Return to Sender" label on stating "Insufficient Address".

As this person is living, I have replaced part of the address with asterisks :

F ***********
*** Malabar Road
Marouba ***
New South Wales
Sydney
Australia.

Please can someone give me advice on what extra information I need on the address please?

Well, for starters, I'm assuming you wanted to send it to Maroubra, not Marouba 

The accepted way to write addresses over here would be:

Maroubra  NSW  2035
Australia

You have to include a postcode (the post office here in Aus is not quite as creative as the Royal Mail, and won't go out of its way to hunt down incomplete addresses    )

2035 is the postcode for Maroubra.  If you need to look up another postcode, you can check here:
http://www1.auspost.com.au/postcodes/

Yes, but you don't have to put what city a suburb is part of, so there's no need to add "Sydney" to the address.
The important elements (and the only ones needed) are Suburb, State, and Postcode.

I cannot believe that I have all the elements you have suggested in the address on my envelope, and it didn't reach its destination

The elements are all there, but maybe it's the layout that is confusing poor old Australia Post   
My advice is to lay it out as I have indicated above, and you should have no problems. 
i.e.

[person's name]
123 Malabar Rd
Maroubra  NSW  2035
Australia

Hi,

Just wanted to add that if you found the address on whitepages.com.au , this directory only states the street number of an address.  This means that if the recipient lives in an apartment eg. Unit 3 of number 123 Malabar Road (usually written as 3/123), then the postman may not be able to deliver it if you only have '123 Malabar Road', especially if the building contains a large number of apartments (hope that makes sense). Of course it's difficult to know if the premises is an apartment complex!  But if your letter is returned again, this might be why.  There's no other locality in NSW called Maroubra so even without a postcode it should have been possible to deliver the letter if the property was a house ie. freestanding dwelling and the address and recipient's name was correct.
