1871 census. Francis Constant
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 20:21 BST (UK) »
I'm loking for a Francis Constant (sometimes spelt Constance) in the 1871 census. I have no idea where in England he might  have been.

Francis was born in Normandy France about 1800. In 1841 he was living in Toddington Gloucestershire, married to Mary Ann. In 1861 they were in Broadway WOR. In 1881 there is a Francis Constant , aged 81, born in France and living in Cadogan Terrace London with a wife Susannah, and there is a possible marriage of Francis Constant and Susannah Brett in 1867 St George Hanover Square.

I don't have access to the whole of the 1871 census. Could someone help please?

 Hi Pauline and Suz,
Thanks for the replies.
The family in Halford is almost certainly  the right one. Francis's wife was born in Gretton GLO.
I'm now not sure whether the Francis Constant in London is the right man. I have just found
a Francis Conscience in 1871 in London, also born in France, who is perhaps more likely to be the one in the 1881 census.

Thanks again

Hi Suz
Thanks for the offer but I have the family in 1851. The death looks like him, I'll have to get the certificate. I doubt whether there is much chance of following him back to France.
One of the censuses says he was born in Normandy but is marked as a "British subject"
If I remember my history from a long while ago he would have been born between the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon. So was he born a British subject or did they have naturalisation in those days??? If he was born a British subject what was at least one of his parents doing in France at that time?????

Questions, questions

regards
