Shoulder Mutton Yard, Stockton
« on: Saturday 01 September 07 13:32 BST (UK) »
I'm biting the bullet, so to speak, and going to have another go at my Durham ancestors, with a view to having a trip to Durham for a few days soon.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Shoulder Mutton Yard in Stockton ?   There's a few queries about it on RootsWeb, but no-one on there could suggest a specific place.  I'm assuming it must have been a group of tiny cottages somehow associated with a pub called Shoulder of Mutton ... but that's only a guess.

Hi Lydart

Here is a link to the current street map

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01v9/

Based upon its location on the 1881 census route I think that Shoulder of Mutton Yard would be roughly where the orange arrow is on the map i.e. off High Street just before Ramsgate.

Unless Pels knows better ;D

There are many yards in that area.  Stockton and Middlesbrough seem to be awash with them.  They tended to be an alleyway leading to tenement houses at the back of a main street as far as I can see.  Each building housed several families.   Mostly very poor - at least mine were!   Every other building seemed to be a drinking house too.   My gt grandfather obviously knew them all as he dropped dead in the street from excessive drinking - reeling home with his mother who was also intoxicated according to the newspaper report!
You may be better going to Cleveland Archives in Middlesbrough for Stockton Records.   It is smaller and less impersonal and has lots of stuff.  At least check with Durham whether they have what you want before you go there.  www.clevelandfhs.org.uk is worth a visit too.   A very good society to join if you have ancestors in that area.   Middlesbrough library had various things of interest  too but I have not been for several years

Hello Lydart. I had a look in the Slaters 1851 Directory and it shows the Shoulder of Mutton as 102 High Street Stockton with the landlord as George Fortune.
I then looked at Stockton pictures http://picture.stockton.gov.uk/
to  get a general idea as to where it was situated. Just type in 102 high street
in the Stockton pictures search box and browse the photos.

Thanks for that Adam ... I can see the general area now, but I wonder if anyone has older pictures ... or even one of the Shoulder of Mutton itself !

Hi Lydart,

Was it renamed "Stockton Hotel"?

http://picture.stockton.gov.uk/photos/S255.aspx

Shoulder of Mutton Yard was/or site of is off West Row (actual yard)

Are you looking for Law/Bainbridge on census? and what year

Best regards George

Yes ... I've got Jane Elizabeth Law (she's my beautiful avatar !) on the 1851 census with her family; it was her sister Mary Ann Law who married Henry Bartholomew Bainbridge ... and that's as far as I've got !  There were seven children (of which Jane and Mary were two ...)

Jane married her husband Alfred Clark and gave birth to my grandfather in Somerset in 1877, after which I have them more or less sorted out.

But its working backwards from Jane that is giving me problems ...

Hi Lydart,

Piccies at: -

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01vk/

1928 Wards directory gives 102 high St as Royal Exchange Hotel.

Yard behind as Exchange Yard

Now Exchange Wine Bar I think.

No luck with Ancestry  :(

Overhead photo with guess at location of yard

Regards George
