James Harding
« on: Monday 03 September 07 13:22 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I think James Harding was born around 1796 in Cookham Berkshire.  In the 1841 census it is ticked to say born in this parish.  He has 5 children:
Louisa 1826
William 1827
Charles 1829
Emma 1831
George 1833
There is no mention of a wife.

By 1851 he is married to Mary and there are 2 more children:
Ann Smith 1831
Charles Henry Smith 1842
Looking back a few pages on the census they appear to be living at Moor Hall Cookham and James is working as a carpenter.

Can anyone find out more about him?  Information from  Maidenhead and Cookham seem very difficult to find,
Thank you, Abaim

A tick in 1841 means born in this county - not this parish - you may need to look further afield.

if you get a copy of his marriage cert to Mary then this would tell you his fathers name and his age, occupation and residence.

to make sure you get the right marriage cert you may need to buy a copy of one of the later childrens birth certificates to get Marys maiden name.

good luck
Toni

maybe Mary was a Smith and the other children are hers, from a previous marriage, so you may possibly be looking for a James Harding / Mary Smith marriage

Newburychap,
That was a slip of the fingers - I did mean he was born in Berkshire.

And Toni  - I had assumed Mary was a Smith and that they were her children.
Which, would any of you suggest ordering - James second marriage cert. to Mary or one of his children?  He does have children born after 1837 - whoops just checked and they were all born too early!  So would Mary's cert. really give me the neccesary info.

This is all becoming a little expensive!
Thanks for your input, Abiam

Hi Abiam,

This is all from the IGI.

James Harding baptised 15/5/1796  Cookham s/o James & Sarah

James Harding = Sarah Rixon 18/2/1822 Clewer

Louisa Harden born 1/1/1823 bp 2/2/1823 Hurley d/o James & Sarah
William Harden born 17/9/1826 bp 8/10/1826 Hurley s/o James & Sarah
Charles  bp 28/12/1828 Cookham
Emma bp 31/10/1830 Cookham
George bp 30/12/1832 Cookham

James Harding = Mary Smith 28/11/1846 Cookham

Ann Smith and Charles Henry Smith must be her children from a previous marriage.

Some of the above are those IGIs submitted by a LDS member and need to be confirmed by the PRs.

Hurley, Clewer and Cookham are all very near each other.

I am so cross with myself I don't know how I missed that, Jill.  Probably looking at too many different people!

Thank you very much, all the children fit beautifully,

Regards, Abiam

do you need to order a certifcate now at all? you just need to confirm the details given by Jill in the Parish Records,

the certificates would only give you the residence at time or marriage and the occupation of both parties, whereas the birth wil just give you the place of birth. in additon to the detials provided by Jill from IGi so its up to you if you really need these.

So, where will I find Parish Records for Cookham?

And IGI are so unreliable sometimes - I followed a whole branch in error at  one time.  I have found (on the IGI) the possible father of 'my' James with the right sort of dates but giving James born in Great Marlow.  And his father Mordecai (what a name!!!) who was born in Great Marlow and Great Badminton Glos!  I know GM is Bucks but as I can't find James' father in Berks could this be due to mistranscribing?

Do we ever really know when we get this far back?  Any thoughts?

Hi,

Apart from the IGI and actually visiting the Berks Record Office, the only thing I can suggest is to request some research via Berks Records Office. They are very good, but it's not cheap. The Berks FHS have some name search facilities but - I think - not for baptisms. They may be able to help with marriages and burials. Check out the 2 websites -

http://www.berkshirerecordoffice.org.uk/familyhistory/index.htm

http://www.berksfhs.org.uk

Although it looks as if you have a similar predicament to mine - ancestors who spread themselves out over the Berks/Bucks/Oxon border! It's frustrating!  ::)

Anyway, I've had another look on the IGI -

James Harding = Sarah Gray 29/7/1793  Medmenham, Bucks (about 7 miles from Cookham)

Maria bp 23/3/1794 d/o James & Sarah in Medmenham

Then there's James in 1796 in Cookham & a submitted IGI for

John bp Cookham 6/2/1802

I can't find any more.

I would guess that Sarah died and James remarried to

Elizabeth Wix (Wicks?) 8/5/1802 in Cookham.

They then had (all Cookham):

John 6/2/1803
Ann 3/6/1804
William 20/4/1806
Thomas 3/9/1809

Going back further, there is a baptism for

James Hearding 28/4/1771 in Cookham, s/o James & Ann.

Hope this is of some help.

Jill
