Hi Kas

Are they the family in Milton, Gravesend 1901 census?  If so, are you sure his birthplace says "Marshes" - could it be something like "Milstead" or "Nurstead"?

Hi all  :)

Do you have access to the image, Casalguidi? If not then I'd say Nurstead is very likely - more so than Milstead, and it definitely doesn't look like Marshes.
There is one in 1881, yet a little bit older however:

Does it say James' occupation on the cert, Kas?  :)

No, I don't at the minute, Tati - thanks :)

I found a William PHILLIPS (parents James & Jane of Northfleet, labourer) baptised Nurstead 1848
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01vs/ but couldn't see a George around about that time.

If that 1881 census entry Tati mentions is significant, then I wonder if these two marriages are too .................. ie. William PHILLIPS m Elizabeth and a Jane Elizabeth PHILLIPS (both children of James PHILLIPS deceased) who both married at Christchurch, Milton, Gravesend 11 Dec 1875

Hi Kas

Tati very kindly checked the 1901 census for this family and George's birthplace does not say "Marshes" - it could be "Nurstead"

thanks for looking i will pass that information on to the people involved. it was being researched by me for an elderly aunt via another relative who doesnt know the internet very well but is trying to help her. overnight there has been a crisis and this persons mother in law has been rushed to hospital and is not expected to survive ( she is 95) so for the moment all research is postponed. will get back to this when crisis is over and all have recovered.
many thanks
