1841 Sussex Census Barnes Westfield
« on: Friday 17 December 04 05:54 GMT (UK) »
HI

Could you please look up my Barnes ancestors in 1841 census, they should be in Westfield

Thomas Barnes                   b.1787 East Stoke, Dorset(?maybe)
Mary Ann (Weston) Barnes b.1790 Salehurst, Sussex
William Barnes                    b.1829 Brede, Sussex
Reuben Barnes                   b.1836 Westfield, Sussex

Also in Westfield, if possible, Esther, the wife of William Barnes (married 1849)
Esther   b.25 May, 1829 Westfield, Sussex
I have her bible with the inscription Esther Barnes, May, 12, 1844 in the front.  I have assumed this may be her confirmation date, and since she did not marry until 1849, her maiden name may have been Barnes as well.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Hi Tom

I have found the following in the 1841 Census for Westfield the writing is not brilliant but here goes:
Address: Little Nortons

Thomas Barnes  Age  42 Occ. Agr. Lab
Mary                           49
Elliza                           17
'Estere'                      12
Harriet                       10
Sam                             8
Reuben                        6

All born in Sussex. These are the only Barnes at Westfield. I've just rechecked 'Estere' definitely written like that there is no H but might have been wrongly transcribed by the census enumerator.

That's about the limit of the 1841 Census.
 Hope this helps

Thanks Pete,

Do you mean East Stoke in Dorset?  Are these Barnes descendents of the East Sussex, Brede-Westfield Barnes?

I see on the map there is also an Eastoke near Portsmouth

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Pete,

I am a descendent of the East Stoke,  Barnes Family.
Have researched the family back to Thomas Barnes born abt 1732 but can't find his Parents. He marries in Coombe Keynes, Dorset.
They are  my brick wall.
Would be grateful of some help.

Cheers
