Hello, I am researching my family and my mother's maiden name was Wombwell. Her grandfather James Wombwell was born in 1827 in England, and died here in the US.  I keep hitting a brick wall and cannot find when James came to the US or any more info about him.  My grandmother had a book at one time about the Wombwell Circus, and told us that her great great grandfather was a lion tamer in the circus, but book has disappered since her death.  Any info would be greatly appriciated.  I have found info on George Wombwell's menagerie, but can't find if he was married or had any children.  Thanks!  Terri

Hi Terri

I take it you do not know where in England your mothers father was born. There are a number of James Wombwell. Did he marry in England or USA?

I think the best way is for me to send you a pm with an email address

Hi,
My name is Michael Addy, my ggggrand father was born in Wombwell in 1791, his name was George Robert Addy. I know he eventually left for treeton. I am trying to find more information about my lineage as related to Wombwell and if there are still Addy's remaining in the towhship. I hope you can provide me with some assistance.

Sincerely,
Michael William Addy

Hi Michael

With what I can see the family were from Sheffield. George married Elizabeth Marshall 25 Dec 1820 at Treeton and he died 7 Feb 1843 at treeton aged 51. His father was George Addy born 28 Oct 1768 at Sheffield, he married Rose Ratcliffe 12 Dec 1792 died 13 Jan 1835 at Sheffield.

I will look to see if I can find anything else but hope this helps

Hi Mike - And welcome to Rootschat..lots of help here.  Do you have any further info re George ?? name of wife or did he have children etc etc.
Have come up with one George Addy baptized 1787 at Barnsley, St Mary. mother Sarah Addy (pauper) and he was base-born.
There are quite a number of Addy's still in the general area, so may be hard to pin down.  Any added info would be helpful.

Hi Christine,
Well, I've managed to trace my lineage back to George Wombwell, of the famous Wombwell Menagerie Circus; he was my great great grandfather's brother.  My question for anyone is, was George married, and did he have any children?  Thanks!  Terri Lund

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this so bear with me.
My great grandfather was the licence at the Travellers Rest on Park Street (Next to the school) in the 1901 census. In 1911 he had left the pub and was down the pits. My Grand father told me a story in the early 1960's that he lost his licence due to a "BET". A visitor bet that he could "worry" and eat a barn rat which had been tethered to a table leg, and he would do this every night for a week. the police found out and stepped in and he lost his licence. About a month after I had been told this story it was reported in the South Yorkshire Times under the 50 years ago feature.

Has any one any details of this. i would love to include it in my family history stories.

many thanks John
