Hi Peony
Maybe not ignore that Rushden baptism but just put it to one side until more information to confirm or otherwise perhaps??

Whilst some bridegrooms who were widowers/bigamists may have been described as "bachelor" in a marriage entry pre 1837, "widower" generally meant what we understand by the word! So Bedford St Johns parish register might give some guidance.

You'd be on safer ground ignoring the Rushden baptism if William was a bachelor in the 1819 marriage

Hi,

My copies of the register are on microfiche - so next time I get the chance I will check them out.  But when I first went throught them I did not put down that he was a widower.  I will let you know.

Surely I am on safe ground as we have a William Litchfield (married to Sarah)alive and well and living in Raunds in the 1841 and 1851 census and a William Litchfield (married to Mary) also living in Bedford in the 1841, 1851, 1861 census.

Surely this will prove that we have two William Litchfields living in the same area.  I know that my William Litchfield (Bedford) was born in Rushden.  I think I need to trace the William (Raunds) baptism to be completely sure.  All the ones coming out of Rushden are accounted for.  But I have been told that their are Litchfields in the Brixworth area in the 1640 and my Litchfields came out of Walgrave in the 1690's.  So hopefully another strain of the family.

Can you see any age for William Litchfield (Raund) in the 1851 census?

Thanks

Peony

Hi Peony

The William married to Sarah and living in Raunds in 1851 is born c 1777 but in North Stanwick rather than Raunds as I mistakenly suggested earlier. I think his birthplace does confirm him as the one who married Sarah Ekins in Raunds in 1817 as Stanwick was given as his place of residence. What it doesn't confirm is who the William and Sarah were who had a child baptised in Rushden - it could have been the Raunds couple but it could have been your William who married another Sarah in an unknown parish. Hopefully his marriage to Mary does give a status at marriage. Let us know :D

Hi,

Thanks Jan,

I sometimes wish I had a microfiche reader sat next to my computer - it would make life easier.

Hi Peony
Do you have microfiche copies of original registers then? In which case how did you come by them? I could do with Wrestlingworth registers in particular but haven't seen them for sale anywhere.

Hi,

I think mine are transcripts - but they tend to put enough detail such as widower etc in them.  Mine were from a well known shop with chest in the title.  But I now know that the Bedfordshire records office sell paper copies as well.  I just need to win the lottery to get everyone that I need.

Are you sure this isn't the transcript that stops at 1812? (all Beds parishes up to 1812 have been transcribed).

If post 1812 transcripts were also available it would be great, but I'm not aware that any have been produced.
