Mr. PARKIN BLADES in Westmorland
« on: Tuesday 18 September 07 12:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help me??

I am trying to find out any information on a MR. PARKIN BLADES who cut the first sod of soil, in the construction of the SETTLE - CARLISLE Railway. This was is in 1870.  He was an agent for a Sir Richard Tufton of Appleby Castle.

I think he was an ancestor of a friend of mine, and knows nothing else about him.

Any help on this, I would greatly appreciate.

Many thanks,
Pauline.

Hi Pauline
Appleby Castle archives may have more about your man.   You obviously had not looked at www.familysearch.org which is where hepburn had found information for you.  That is a first site for many of us - all free and with much information from many parish records, though not all, and also the 1881 census free to look at.  You should be able to have fun there!

That's a pity.  This post is six years old so lots of things have changed.    So much more available on the web for a start.
