Doris Marshall was born some time between 1900 and 1915 in Nottinghamshire,  thought to be either East Retford or Worksop, her mother was Sarah and father William(? not sure?) the parents were publicans, any help please.

Hi Angler10

If she died after 1969 then her date and place of birth should be on the death certificate providing the person who registered the death knew the correct information.  If not ...........

Did she not get married?  A certificate should confirm her father's name.

Did she have any brothers/sisters - if so, names?  Date/place of birth for them?  Older or younger?

Did she have any relatives that died in WW1?

Any idea of any pub they ran at any time - directories and/or electoral registers should confirm the publicans name.

Sorry so many questions but a bit more info would help us to help you if you have it.

Hi Angler

The FreeBMD has some marriages in Nottinghamshire up to 1910, there seems to be around a dozen or so for DM, four or five of them being in Worksop, unless someone has done the research and sees your message it will be a question of buying some certificates or waiting for the 1911 census to appear

Hi Casalguide, thanks for the reply. The only info I have about Doris is she may have had a brother, William (?Bill) and a sister Edna. Her death date is unknown, I have tried a search for all of them. Her father survived  the 1st WW however he was not the same man on return. He may have died in Hertfordshire, no trace found. They may have run pups known as 'Ship' or 'Black Swan' in Retford before the 1st WW, maybe after? Where would I get sight of the publications you quoted? Again thanks for your interest.

Directories and street directories are usually held by the main library/local archives in the area concerned so I should contact them in the first instance.  Also, publicans had to apply for licenses so once you have established the town it may be worthwhile enquiring about petty sessions etc. in the area too.  Some libraries/local archives may even keep files/books on pubs in their area.

There are a few odd directories on the following site.  Try a keyword search for the pub names then select a directory for the correct time period/county.  When you are into the directory, you will get the title page - click next hit.  Ignore the total hits number at the top of the page as this relates to the number of hits in all the directories found - not just the one you are currently looking at.  If you are doing a name keyword search - try Marshall William etc. in that order.

Good luck
