Hi Red

From school history lessons, one of the drawbacks of early steam engines was that the boilers had a tendency to blow up, so I would say that a boilermaker in those days was a skilled (and dangerous) occupation.

Perhaps Richard would be listed as a boilermaker in Gores about 1840-ish?

Hi,

Old Occupation Definition of Boiler Maker was Industrial Metalworker so I would agree something on the lines of Blacksmith, Ironworker, Steelworker etc.

There is a Richard Morgan on the 1841 census aged 20 (age not rounded down) occupation Blacksmith in Liverpool.  Father was John aged 49 and mother Jane aged 46.  Sorry not got the reference to hand - just my jottings from this afternoon!!!  Blowed if I could find him in a later census either!

Regards,
Mo

Hi,

wow! havn't you two been busy, thanks  ;D

I spent some time in the Liverpool Records Office yesterday, looking for Richard Morgan. I found 5 !!!  :o

Richard a mariner, married to Elinor. Richard, a draper, married to Alice. Richard a sawer, married to Margaret. Richard a Grocer, married to Elizabeth, and Richard a Porter, married to Elizabeth.

None of these held any real clues.  ::)

Although, on the marriage certificate I have for Mary Morgan, his daughter, one of the witnesses was a Margaret Morgan. Maybe Mary's sister.

The Richard (a Sawer) I found married to Margaret, was a baptism for a Margaret Morgan 1846. This time line fits too, as Mary was born abt 1848  ???

What do you think??

Hi,

I thought I would let you know I had a break through with this today  :o :D

I found the marriage certificate for Margaret Morgan, Mary's sister. One of the witnesses was Henry Ball. He was Mary's husband.  ;D  Richard the father of Margaret and Mary was recorded as, Mariner!! :o

I have traced this Richard back to being born abt 1920 in Beumaris, Anglesea.

I realise this thread is very old and freezing cold but I have some information regarding Richard Morgan whoes occupation was a boiler maker.

My Great Great Grandfather, Richard Morgan b.1817 in Oldswinford (Stourbridge) Worcestershire was a Boiler Maker by trade. He was married to Elizabeth Jones (2nd wife) in Liverpool on 11/08/1845.

Richard is something of an enigma. He appears to have plied his trade arround every port in England and is recorded as having spent time in Bristol, Liverpool, Hull and London (Poplar) where he died in the 1890's.

The only link to the original post regarding Mary Morgan is the stated trade. I have no information regarding Mary in any other context. If she had been this Richard's daughter she did not live with the family. In 1861 Elizabeth had several children in tow and was living in the "poor house" in Lincoln - Richard does not appear on the 1861 census but I am not surprised.

I hope you pick up this message just in case it helps with your story.
