Sarah LEWIS (HOCKEY)
« on: Friday 21 September 07 00:01 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone I hope that you are all well. Have searched and found the late Sarah Hockey sister to Henry Hockey from Somerset Wincaton, she died on the 17/8/1885 in Glebe N.S.W. she was 30 years old when she married Joseph Lewis and had been in Australia for at least 32 years, her parents were Robert and Ann Hockey (nee Cross) on her death certificate. I hope that this helps with finding out more news about this family. Have a good weekend and take care.

Regards,
Janet :-*

Hi Janet  ;D

A link to your earlier post for background:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,249493.15.html

Sarah married Henry Lewis in 1853, so if she was then aged 30, she would be born abt 1823? Does that fit with her age at death also?

IGI has a marriage: Robert HOCKEY and Ann CROSS  21 Dec 1808   Horsington, Somerset.
Horsington children born to a Robert HOCKEY and Ann are:
Caroline HOCKEY b 27 Apr 1809, chr 21 May 1809
William HOCKEY chr 2 Sep 1810
Mary HOCKEY chr 15 Mar 1812

While information on Death certs can be incorrect, if this is your Robert & Ann, parents of Henry and Sarah - then they (the parents) would be born quite a bit earlier than the circa 1800 imagined by births of children born 1820's. Perhaps Sarah and Henry were late arrivals.

The following, I think,  referrred to by Carole in the earlier post may be a better bet for Robert (do you have any indications on Australian records as to the  occupation of Sarah & Henry's father?)

1851: Wincanton, Somerset
Ref: HO107; Piece: 1931; Folio: 565; Page: 1
Address: High Street
Head: Edward HISCOCK 30, b Witton Leigh? Somerset
Wife: Betsy 32, b South Cheriton
Dau: Jane 6, b Wincanton
Dau: Elizabeth 3, b Wincanton
Lodger: Robert HOCKEY 75, widower, Pauper Ag Lab, b Horsington

Edward HISCOCK and Betsy WHITE married Wincanton , Sep Qtr 1843
(Checked to see what her (maiden name was)

This topic, by chatter hellen,
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,113619.0.html
seems to be looking for that Robert HOCKEY of 1851 (and also has posted on it his probable death and 1841 Census).

Cheers

Hello Ambly, Great to receive your message, Sarah was married in the year 1854 to Joseph Lewis they happened to manage a Inn called "The Valley Inn" at Summerhill, and Henry Hockey leased the Rockley Farm from Sarah 1863-1870, she is buried in the Church of England cemetery Bathurst N.S.W. Australia. The information I have received from the Census states that Robert and Ann Hockey were a Schoolmaster and Schoolmistress. Thanks for your help and take care.

Regards,
Janet :-*

Ooh. I just found information:

Robert HOCKEY b 13 Feb 1777, died 1819 Horsington
Married 12 Dec 1808 Horsington to:
Ann CROSS

That's all there is on Robert & Ann...but it does have that  Robert was son of: Robert HOCKEY and Frances GARLAND and there is quite a bit of that generation and prior

Of course, dying in 1819 would be a problem, if that death is correct, perhaps the tree owner has made an incorrect assumption, as he has no dates for Ann, no children etc etc..

I shall PM you

Cheers

Hi again

Our posts crossed in transit!

This from the other topic was the 1841 Census that you refer to?

This is the only Robert & Ann I could find - Winsham
Robert Hockey 40  schoolmaster
Ann Hockey 35  schoolmistress
Emma Hockey 13

There is no confirmation though that this couple are the parents of Henry and Sarah.... it was just that the names are right and the area is within range...

I'll see what I can find on them!

Cheers

Hello to Everyone.  I have just come across this post re Sarah Hockey and was wondering if anyone knew who the Joseph Lewis was that married Sarah Hockey?
I have a death cert for a Joseph Lewis that died in 1922  Redfern  NSW born abt 1851 I wonder if he is their son? his parents were listed as being Joseph Lewis and Sarah Unknown.
I'm wondering if this is the same person?  The only problem is I cannot find a birth for him at all.

There is a Joseph Lewis also that married Jane Noble (my 3 x times g grandparents) in 1853 the same year  the another Joseph Lewis married Sarah Hockey, they all lived in the Bathurst area in NSW.

This Joseph Lewis is not the son of Jane Lewis (Noble) as she arrived in NSW in 1852 and he is not listed on any of her certs.  I have a copy of a marriage cert between the Joseph Lewis (born 1851) and Elizabeth Hart this has Jane Lewis and Joseph Lewis as the parents maybe he was raised by them?
I hope this makes sense

Hello sasarina, great to receive your enquiry about Sarah Lewis (Hockey) I have her death certificate saved 17/8/1885 aged 68 Parramatta Road Glebe NSW Australia, she is the daughter of Robert Hockey and Ann Cross, sister of Henry Hockey who died in 1899 aged 76. I have traced this family for awhile and taking a rest and will commence again soon, search in Rockley, George's Plains Bathurst area's. :)
Regards,
Janet :)

Hi Jan thanking you so much for the reply
Yes I was having a break from researching, but with covid19 and stuck in the house for a time I rekindled my interest.
