Is there a town called Corfen or Corven please?
« on: Friday 21 September 07 23:19 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I have someone born in either Corven or Corfen, N. Ireland (spelling varies on census's).  He marries a girl from Co. Monaghan and they settle in Derbyshire.

The thing is I can't seem to find this place on a map, or in a county.

Can anyone help please

Thanks, Joan

Could it be Cavan?

When you say, N. Ireland what year are you taking about as Northern Ireland didn't exist before 1921.

Hiya Joan,

I wonder if it's a spelling variation of Corfehan which is in the Civil Parish of Tynan in Co. Armagh.
That could be the name ... Armagh and Monaghan are adjoining counties. What is the name of
the family you're researching?

Oh, ah I see.

Right he was born in 1795, lives in England on 1841, 1851 and 1861 (Although suspect came over around 1830).

Since his wife's family were from Co Monaghan, I presumed that Corven/Corfen would be in same area??

Hi Christopher,

Name is Dolan

There are two townlands in Co Donegal named Corveen, one in the parish of Tullaghhobegly, the other in the parish of Donegal.

That might kill that idea ... there's only one Dolan listed in the Valuation extracts for Armagh.

The Valuations took place in the County in 1864.

Counties Cavan, Leitrim and Roscommon had the greatest density of Dolans at the time of the Valuations.

Hi,

Oh well, can we at least summise it would be expected to be in the "top half" of Ireland, if he marries a girl from Co, Monaghan  ???
