You know .... I was looking at that 1851 one Andrew ..... and I was trying to figure out if the Eliza Lloyd was Elizabeth - who had maybe re-married !!   :-\

Annie  :)

EDIT ... but then that wouldn't be right either ( about Elizabeth I mean !! )
Quote
James & Elizabeth were married in 1847 in Preston and Robert married Alice Woodall in Preston in 1866.

I wondered whether his father was Charles James  Yates who hasn't died bn c 1820 died 1889.

He appears to have married in 5/7/1885 to Eliza Salkeld most of their children show on the vri  BUT he also has a daughter Lydia in 1881 who was born prior to this marriage.  I sthere a clue on any of the census?

Hi,

I think we can rule out the one living with Hugh Sheddon and family on the 1851 and 61 as he is still in Liverpool on the 1871.  Albeit married but he is a Ship Flag Maker.

Back to the drawing board!

Hi Guys,
Just got home from work,I had researched the Sheldon connection for awhile but discarded it after awhile, I think there was also a Hugh and Marry Yates there a few years later and could not connect them to Robert. There is also a Robert border with a Dorthy Harley house hold but I couldn't connect him either. This has been a great experience so see all the wonderful people willing to help.

Can I please ask some questions ?

1. Has anybody checked the shipping manifests and the US side of this question ?

2. Could he have been born BEFORE they were married and only took the name of Yates / or variations of that name  afterwards ??

3. Did any of them sign their name with a mark ?

If this has already been sorted out .... I'll get my coat !!  ::) ::)

Please don't get your coat the weather is still to warn for that,LOL I have tried to check but I am not sure where he left from. I know he arrived I think in New York between 1869 & 1871 from there he went to Mass. The 2 ships I tried were City Of Paris & city of New York. And Elizabeth did sign with a mark. In answer to the wrong birth cert it listed Robert Yates brn Nov 1847 on Stanley St Liverpool mother listed as Jane Yates and father late Fitzgerald formerly Johnston :o

Just thought I would complicate things even more, on the 1870 census from Mass which has Roberts family the is also a James age 50 and Mary age 39 and several children, so maybe James & Elizabeth were divorced by then ??? or maybe this James isn't Roberts dad ????
OK, I guess I should just check into a mental hospital now :-[

Hello

I have checked this chap out. He appears on every census before 1881 and he is consistently described as a Professor of Music. Here is a brief summary of his census entries and a bit of BMD information....

In 1871 he is with his second wife Eliza and 8 children including Lydia L aged 21 (the "L" stands for Lewis) and Annie E aged 23.

In 1861 he is with Eliza and 6 children including a Charles E aged 14

In 1851 he appears with Charles E, Ann E and Lydia and although it indicates that he is married, there is no wife present.

There is no sign of a son called Robert at any stage.

In 1841 he seems to be living with someone called Dinah Bibby

On http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ the three (pre Eliza) children are shown with a mother’s maiden name of Jones.

Marriage Registration

1845 Liverpool AMJ quarter 20 230

Lydia Lewis Jones
Charles James Yates

Death Registration

1849 Preston AMJ quarter 21 498

Lydia Lewis Yates

I think (despite his name and the Liverpool marriage) that we can eliminate him from our enquiries.

Hi All,

This topic rang a bell from the past so I  did a google and found one posted on LANCSGEN  in May 2006.  It states that Robert was mayor of Ellicott City, Maryland for 8 years.

I feel that such a prominent person would have had a good write up when he first became mayor and also when he died.  These are usually quite detailed.

Have you already looked for these Gigi?  If so were there any clues at all?

Regards,
Mo
