1861 & 1871 Look up please. Joseph PEATON
« on: Wednesday 26 September 07 15:48 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I've been trying to track down Joseph PEATON and his daughter Julia PEATON.

Julia states on later census' that she was born in Birmingham or Hockley in Warwick in 1853. I've not been able to find a birth for her either.

Julia married Samuel HARPLEY in March 1871, a month before the census. She married in Bradford and was with her husband in Tong, Bradford during the 1871 census.

Her Dad Joseph, on their marriage certificate, has an occupation as a "Mason"
He would have been born somewhere between 1824 - 1834.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

no sign of her or a Joseph  .... could be looking at a variant spelling, or possibly she took his name when married  .... maybe a grandfather etc.... ie she will be under another name altogether in 1861.

do you have any Certs for the children born after 1871 - is her maiden name consistant ?

Hi,

Thankyou for your help.

On her marriage cert it says "PEATON" she signed.
On sons Birth Cert it says "PAYTON"
On another sons Birth Cert it say "PEYTON"

I do have an image of birth record of Julia Peaton in 1853 in Dorchester but I don't think this is my Julia.

nope, still cant make it work - it may well be that Joseph died b4 1861, altho I cant see him in any of those guises.

My guess is that she was either illegitimate and used a relations name as her Father - not an uncommon tactic - or her mother married again and she's on the 1861 in her stepfathers name. Usually this can be resolved with a Birth Cert - but thats another problem    :P

Hi Newf,

Thankyou so much for giving them a go.
I just seem to have gone around in circles with my 2nd Gt Grandmother and her "Dad"?

Maybe one day I'll puzzle it out.

Regards
