Argentina
« on: Wednesday 26 September 07 21:08 BST (UK) »
This week "Womans' Hour" mentioned the very large number of men who went to Argentina in the 1800's .  Apparently the passage was paid as well as a year or 2 of accomodation and food .
Has anyone looked for , or found ,  any missing ancestors in Argentina ?
Do you think it's an important destination ?

Absolutely important! From my point of view anyway  ;D

A lot of men went at that time to work on the sheep and Cattle ranches.
A lot of Shepherds especially from Scotland and certain parts of England were recruited in specific drives.  And later NZ Shepherds were also valued. Some did a 'tour of duty" and then went back home, but many stayed on  and settled as they were able to buy land - something they may never have been able to do back home!

There a lot of sources out there for British in Argentina, the two countries  had quite a connection long before the 1982 War!!   A Good database is here:

That was quick !
Really interesting . When did the emigration to Argentina start ?
I guess there were a lot of Irish as well as Welsh.
I'm not aware that I have anyone there - but then I don't know much about it .
Thank you for your replies .
Linden
