John Wallace WILSON
« on: Sunday 30 September 07 13:54 BST (UK) »
Hi all

This is a bit of a long shot but hope someone can help or point me to possible sources. I'm a real novice on Australian records.

I have a cousin (grandfather's first cousin so mine twice removed), John Wallace Wilson, b. June Q, 1887 in Chirk, Denbighshire (Registration District, Oswestry). At some point during WW1 or just after, he went with his brothers to Malysia. His brothers came back in the 1930s. He doesn't seem to have and I'm thinking he went to Australia.

All I have (from a family member) is that he married a woman called Joy who was Australian. They had at least two children - John and Gordon. I've checked Findmypast but can't find anything there.

It might be that a death record for him is available somewhere.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Gadget

There's a WWII service record for a John Wallace Wilson b 16 Jun 1920, Hawthorn Victoria, NOK Georgina Wilson.  Might be the son?  http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/veteran.asp?ServiceID=A&VeteranID=432581#summary1

Hi Jane

That looks very promising. Thank you  :)

The names, John Wallace ran through this family - my uncle was also a JW. How would I find a marriage record for him?  I see he was born Hawthorn, Victoria!

Vic BMD have 3 records for a John Wallace Wilson, a death and 2 births - but I couldn't see the details without spending money (it was only 0.99 but still!).  Didn't seem to be a marriage though  :(

I'm sure they will. ;D  At least with the Victoria BMD you can down load the certificate straight away - instant gratification and no waiting weeks for the mail to arrive.  Good Luck!

the only marriage of a John Wallace in Victoria 1914-1942
none of a John Wilson to a Joy - 1914 -1942 in Victoria

John Wallace Smitheon WILSON married Alfreda Mabel SCHMIDT in 1918
reg number: 6494

They had a child (female) in 1920, reg at Caulfield, in the Melbourne suburbs (as is Hawthorn)  They may be John's parents, the older WW2 men were prone to knock a year or two off their age.  The birth indexes on cd go to 1920, though online they have been taken back to about 1907 (a new 100 year rule)   Their were other Wilsons with Wallace as forenames.

No death in Victoria for this or your chap to 1985.

Christine  :)
