For many years I have been hoping to come across our GURNER family sampler, which was sewn between the years of 1768 and 1794 by a Sarah Gurner, then completed with a few extra details by her sister Ann when Sarah died. It provided a vital piece of family history, first noting the birth of her father James in 1695 - in other words an accurate record of 100 years of Gurner family history. As the family had become Protestant Dissenters by the 18th Century, details of Anglican baptisms and marriages are notably absent from the Parish Records of their village in Cambridgeshire.
I only know about its existence because a lady in Essex who owned it then, wrote a transcript of all the family names, births, marriages and deaths sewn on it in a letter to a great aunt of mine in the late 1960's. Since then it has completely disappeared.
Do other people have interesting samplers of their own that describe their own family history. I'd very much like to hear about them...
