James WHITTLE m. Nancy EWING, 1790s, Belfast?

Hi,

I'm looking for some help with my research for folks in America.

I want to track down a marriage between:

    James WHITTLE (b. 1764, Glenavy)
    Nancy EWING  [or Mary?]

Timeframe: 1785-1805.

Place: Belfast (most likely).

[JW was in trade with his brother John WHITTLE there, importing English woolen goods and exporting corn/flour.
Some EWINGs in Belfast were bankers and cotton mill owners.]

He was also involved with other brothers in mills (linen/flour) at Muckamore, so may have got married at Antrim town.

Religious presuasion: Protestant (Low Church)


At least one of the couple's early children (Mary WHITTLE) was born in Ireland, in the first decade of the 19thC.

Later James took his family to Liverpool, then to Co. Mayo to run a mill in Clew Bay near Westport. 

Don't know where he ended up - possibly Dublin.

Held (apparently) at PRONI.


I found the handle to it by using the Search facility at www.nationalarchives.ie .

No such joy with searching PRONI's index.
Using either the surname or the doc ID.

[Maybe some of the proposed £30M spend (of our money) for redeploying the repository to Titanic Quarter in trendy down-town Belfast will be allocated to improving such logical things prior to the big move ... else it might struggle to stay afloat!]

"Belfast Sixty Years Ago: Recollections of a Septuagenarian" which was written by the Rev. Narcissus G. Batt, A.M., Rathmullan, Co. Donegal mentions a Robert Ewing who was connected with Batt, Ewing & Co. www.libraryireland.com/articles/belfast60/index.php
