Help With Mariners

Hi,

I have two relations the died young and according their admon's they were both mariners. We now have discovered in a PR marriage that their uncle was a ship owner. So the question originally was did these two die at sea and did they serve on the uncles ship?

How does one go about finding any of this out. Can one even find what ships the uncle owned. We are talking about Great Yarmouth and the early 19th century.

There are several threads around about Mariners.

I take it you are talking pre 1837, i.e pre Civil registration. So gettting death certs is not a possibilty.

As I see you are in Suffolk, I would suggest you visit the Local Record Offive that covers Great Yarmouth and see what they have in the way ofShips records that have survived. Generally they are patchy in what has survived!

Name and rough date of birth and place of birth are helpful if known - or a ship's name if known.

Requesting any information on Thomas Mitchell born Approx 1827 in Poplar, Middlesex, England who married Caroline Stone 06 Apr 1847.

According to their marriage certificate Thomas was a Mariner as was his father Peter and Carolines father James Stone.

I am from Australia and do not know where to start tracing in Middlesex, England for any information on Marines.

I would think that as Thomas and Peter Mitchell are family and James Stone is the father of Caroline who is also a Mariner that they may have served together. But I could be wrong.

Looking to find out if any relatives of mine, born in the northeast of Scotland were sailors.
 
According to my mum, her mother-in-law had an uncle who was a sailor. Could have been Royal Navy or merchant mum had no idea. The only thing she thought was the uncle had been to India
 
I’ve names of about 8 men all born between 1850 and early 1860’s some of whom I’ve found on census records with their parents. However once they leave home it’s difficult to find them. By the sound of it the uncle had been home to visit and brought her presents. We still have an oriental goblet.

Where would be a good place to look?

FindMyPast has seamen’s records, both merchant and Royal Navy.  I would start there.
If you wanted to give the details you definitely have for the 8 men I am sure people will start looking.

Is your mother’s mother in law not your paternal grandmother?

She is indeed my paternal grandmother, who died when I was only 13 months old.
My dad never really spoke about his parents, to be fair I didn’t really ask and as he died when I was 21 I didn’t get any background from him so I’m going on what my Mum said, although she didn’t really know her for that long.

I’ll start another thread.

There are quite a few uncles so it’ll be a bit of a list.

I did notice on a Bapt of one of Thomas/Carolines children he was Thomas Peter.

1881 he is under Peter T Mitchell 1827 Poplar.

There is this Bap;
6 Oct 1822 St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney High Street;
PETER JOHN son of Peter/Elizth Mitchel, Poplar, Mariner
Ooops sadly buried also 1825 age 3 years 4 mths

+ a possible Marriage;
30 Oct 1820 Whitechapel, Middlesex
Peter MITCHELL to Elizabeth HOGG

Limehouse bapts;
23 Oct 1825
LUCINDA and ELIZA MARY Mitchell , to Peter/Eliza, Father a Mariner
(not twins born 1823/1824)

Was looking for Lucinda in 1841 but unfortunately she died 1840 age 17

PETER THOMAS Mitchell bapt 23 May 1827 St Anne, Limehouse to Peter/Eliza, Peter a Mariner
