« on: Thursday 01 March 07 12:05 GMT (UK) »
Emerald Ancestors provides instant access to one of the largest collections of scarce Irish genealogy records available, as well as a range of rare Irish history book reprints.

The company specialise in Irish Ancestry within Northern Ireland. Their extensive database contains birth, marriage, death, and census records for over one million Ancestors in Counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone.

Use their free search facility to trace that elusive Irish Ancestor, or browse their bookstore of scarce historical documents for contemporary accounts of the people, places and ways of life over the last 200 years.

Emerald Ancestors is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. They take pride in delivering historical information that is not readily available elsewhere online. Through extensive research they attempt to identify vital records that remain difficult to access from outside of Northern Ireland and only publish information that they believe is of significant genealogical or historical value to their customers.

This is a subscription site.(1 year £49.99; 1 month £9.99)

You can search the datebase for names, free, and it will tell you how many births, deaths and marriages it has found.

You can then pay a subscription for unlimited access for a month, or a year, and find out more.

Online Databases

Our online genealogy databases offer a comprehensive and expanding collection of Irish records available for the six counties of Northern Ireland. The collection contains over 1,000,000 individual records of birth, marriages, deaths and census returns for Ulster from a variety of original sources including civil registration indices, parish registers and other historical manuscripts.

The free search facility offers you the chance to quickly identify potential ancestor records while the advanced search facilities available to members enables you to narrow down your search to specific locations, time period or types of records.

Using just the free access, I managed to find the marriage date of a Hessie Stevenson to a Warren (no surname) and then found the marriage date of a Warren Coleman to a Hessie (no surname)
As the date was the same, I can guess that this was the marriage of Warren Coleman to Hessie Stevenson, but that's as far as you get for free  :)

Some of us Rootschat regulars have now taken out the 1 month subscription to give it a whirl, so to speak. So far, from my own point of view,  I can report that it has been £9.99 well spent. It would seem the others are finding likewise. Yes, there are some limitations as to what you get for your money and not all record years are presently covered, but there is still loads of stuff in one easy to use site. A long overdue, but very welcome resource.

That's great to hear scotmum.

Some members of Belfast Forum also subscribed. They too reported that they got great value for their money. I'm not surprised at the favourable reports which are coming in about Emerald Ancestors. When you consider there are some sites that allow you to buy credits at £6 a time to view a data set of records (usually you are allowed to view five records per set) and then don't allow you to transfer your unused credits to another data set then Emerald's monthly charge and their annual charge are great value for money.

Hiya Peter,

I'm certain that the site does include all religions.

Presumably you mean all branches of the Christian religion or would you be referring to the Jewish faith ???

Have you thought of posting an email to Emerald Ancestors and asking them ???

Chris

Thanks again

As I am a relative newcomer to researching my family tree I wonder if this site would help me? :-\ I am trying to find the Ingram, Morrison, Mulholland branches of my family. I have absolutely no idea where in Ireland they originated from. They came to Paisley in the early 1800 s and the census and marriage certificates show there birthplace only as Ireland.  I am at a loss  how to proceed any help or advice would be grately appreciated!! :-\ :-\

Hiya  aileenmwallace,

Welcome to RootsChat.

The Emerald Ancestors site might help. If you go up to the top of your page you'll see "search rootschat" Enter the name Mulholland ... that will show other members searching for that surname. You can do the same for the others.

Post a message on the Ireland General Board After Co. Wicklow you'll see messages from members who do not know from which Irish county their ancestors came. Give your message a heading ... Ingram / Morrison / Mulholland then when the county is established one of the Moderators on the site can move your thread to the appropriate board.

I feel your ancestors probably came from the north of Ireland. They may have come originally from Scotland in the 1600s and returned to Scotland.

Christopher
