Hello Joanne and Barbara,

Thanks for taking an interest in this. I have a lot of searching around to do. Since starting my family tree, I have found there are 2 John and Hannah Rodgers in this area, both born around the same time. My John and Hannah say they were born in Lofthouse while the other John and Hannah were born Whitby and Lythe respectively. The second John and Hannah lived in Whitby, while my John and Hannah lived in Lythe. I found the birth of John Rodgers in Lythe 6th August 1785, christened August 1785. Thought this may have been him. Unfortunately I went through the Whitby records and found John Rodgers born 6th August 1785 but christened in September 1785. Now I don't know if this is a duplication of the records. Still did not find anything for Hannah Rodgers (Forth). Have a theory that they were born in Loftus, but christened in another parish because Genuki says that St.Leonards C/E was not there until 1820. Just don't know and will keep trying.

Many thanks
Val

Hello Origins,
Noticed these places have a common thread. May be a clue for you. All in mining areas. North Riding of Yorkshire coast had iron mining and, alum making from coastal rock shale.
Iron mines also inland. Coal mining in Co.Durham, and south Yorkshire ie
Lofthouse nr.Wakefield. Lofthouse in Nidderdale had lead-mines not so far away. Gragareth.
Binns, Howgate, Lister, Mountain, Pickles, Procter, Hall, at Leeds. Bowron at Barnard Castle
Co.Durham. Cordingley, Crosthwaite, Hardwick, Kilburn, Thompson, Turton, nr Methley,Rothwell and Whitkirk nr Leeds. Hall at Hull. Pottage, Key, Risdale, at Lincs.
Links to Howgate at Wigan. Cookson at Huddersfield. Mountain at Otley area.

They certainly have confused me. I made a mistake earlier when I said St.Leonards church at loftus was C/E, it was methodist. Does anybody know if the parish church for Loftus was at Easington near Guisborough? Thanks for looking Jane.

Where are these people buried?? I could go and have a look through the graveyard at Loftus or surrounding area if you think they may be there, if its Lythe, might have to wait for next weekend, are you local to the area?

Hi Jane,

John Rodgers is buried in Lythe and I assume Hannah is as well. On the grave inscriptions on Genuki there is John Rodgers 41 years in the employ of the Mulgrave family. I am sure this is my John.

I am not in the local area, unfortunately, I am in Australia, but was born in Guisborough. I made a short trip, way too short, over to england back in July and stayed with a cousin in Whitby. We did visit the church at Lythe, but it was raining and we could not find the grave unfortunately. If you are able to go over to Lythe and have a further look and maybe find something it would be fantastic. Much appreciated.

Right Ok I have seen that inscription for John on the same site as you. I am happy to go to Lythe but it will be next Saturday, I wonder if anyone else wants to join me ?? If you pm me your email address, that way I will be able to send any pictures I get. Will there be any in Loftus or all at Lythe do you think?? I could do Loftus tomorrow afternoon, after football, shame as they played at Loftus a couple of weeks ago ;D

Anyone fancy a trip to Lythe??

There was a Methodist chapel, but the parish church for Loftus was St. Leonards
Easington parish church was All Saints
