G x 3 Grandfather died Kamish Bay Russia 1855
« on: Thursday 11 October 07 18:57 BST (UK) »
An entry in a family bible, quite simply reads ' died 16th July of cholera in Kamish Bay Russia 1855'

On the 1841 & 51 census, he (Stephen Clasby) is listed as a Mariner.  I've had a quick look & can see Kamish Bay relates to the Crimean war.  All of my other rellies who were mariners, were fishermen or smugglers, so can someone explain to me why he would've been there?

Am I right to assume he'd have been in the Navy??  Would he have sailed from his home town of Southampton?  Would his body have been left out there?  Sorry, so many questions, but it's an area I have absolutely no knowledge of.

Many thanks,

Debbie

Hi Debbie. I had information from the Yahoo Crimean history group as follows

"Source Crimean War Mailing list..
This chap could have been (a) a soldier, (b) a naval rating, (c) a merchant seaman or (d) something else entirely! If (a), then you will find a note of his death in the Muster Roll/Pay List of the relevant regiment; if (b) you will find a note of his death in the Muster Roll of the relevant ship. Documents referred to in (a) and (b) are both available at the National Archive - but they aren't findable via a PROCAT search on individual's names: you will need to know regiment or ship's name. If (c), then I really don't know the procedure - perhaps someone else will be able to oblige, or perhaps you will be able to find something in PROCAT relating to death records of merchant seamen. The Casualty Roll only lists those individuals who were killed or wounded by enemy action. The vastly greater numbers of those who died due to disease, malnutrition, and exposure, are not centrally recorded. The place of death - Kamiesch Bay - was the main port for our French allies, which might well imply that (since he wasn't French), he was a merchant seaman on a ship delivering stores to the French Army."

Lou,  Thanks for all the info.  It gives me somewhere to start at least!!!  I've looked at that page in the bible a million times & wondered why he was in Russia!!!

Liverpool Annie,  many thanks for taking the time to look...much appreciated.  As Lou says, that's another one of ours.  There's a whole long string of Stephen Clasby's....dozens of 'em :)

Thanks to you both,

Debbie
