Hellp, Recuser,
First of all I found this
1851 census
HO107/1933folio 93 page 6
Crossways, Stoke Lane, Somerset
William Davis age 26 Smith b Som West Cranmore
Catharine wie age 27 b Stoke Lane
Edmund son age 7 b ditto
Alfred William son age 5 b ditto
Sarah Ann dau age 3 b ditto
Seward Charles son age 1 b ditto
Then came the problem of finding out where Stoke Lane is or was, was it near Bath
I had to look at the enumerator's schedule & found it as Stoke Lane otherwise Stoke St
Michael. This, in fact, near Shepton Mallet, not really very near Bath. William & Catharine married in Bath, & I had the similar sort of problem with my own ancestor's marrying in Bath in 1832, but they did not live anywhere near Bath they came from a small village near Taunton. Perhaps it was the IN thing to marry in a large church in a main town.
In trying to find Catharine Rossiter in the 1841 census, I found there is a family of Thomas & Martha Rossiter in Stoke Lane but with no Catharine as a daughter but then she would have been old enough to have left home & perhaps go in service.
HO107 bk 14 folio 16 page 2.
There was a Catharine Rossiter in the 1841 census b 1837 in t Michael, Bristol with parents William & Mary, but this did not seem to fit.
HO107 bk 8 folio 20 page 34
re. William Davis, I found there is no West Cranmore but there is a Cranmore again near Shepton Mallet. I found that he is on the same pages as the Thomas & Martha Rossiter in Stoke Lane.
HO107 963 bk 14 folio 16 page 3
Three Ashes Stoke Lane
William Davis age 20 Blacksmith born in co. Yes.
So it looks as tho' the Thomas & Martha family could be the one for Catharine. Would you like the census details ?
Sorry I can't find anything definite for Catharine, I will have another trawl round,
Meliora
