HIGLEY from Waterford
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 03:58 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschat :) - Have I got a doozy for you...

I'm researching the HIGLEY family in Sydney, NSW I have the death certificates of John HIGLEY (c.1816- 3 Sep 1893) and his wife Susan LEAKE (c.1810-29 May 1882), which say that they were both born in Waterford, Ireland and married there in 1836/1837. They had reached Australia by 1840.

The burials were C of E, so I'm thinking that they were Protestant. John was the son of John Higley, and Susan was the daughter of James LEAKE (Sergeant at Mace) and Susan PHILLIPS.

I have no idea whether Waterford refers to the city or the county, or any more specific idea of where the family is from. Higley isn't a very common name, but is my lack of knowledge as to location going to make this impossibly hard?

Any help welcomed

Thanks :)

TN

You could write to the Waterford Geneological Center at Jenkins Lane Waterford city, they have indexed Births, Deaths, and Marriages, and have  burial records, and will be able to help you.

Problem is that civil registration of births, deaths & Catholic marriages only began in 1864 (Protestant marriages from 1845). For earlier details you have to rely on church records (if they still exist) and to find them you need to know religion and area where they lived (parish if not actual townland).
In general, Presbyterian churches don't keep burial records and Church of Ireland usually did. However, many Presbyterians were buried in C. of I. churchyards but not always recorded in burial register.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I am also researching John Higley and his wife Susan Leake.

I have John Birth 15 May 1817.

Not sure of marriage date - 1839?

They arrived in Sydney aboard the vessel "China" on 20 December 1839.

Have you discovered anything else?

Regards
