Hi,

There is a John MacKay interred at Eccles directly behind the Kirk.
I don't have any other details on John MacKay, because he is not
on my trees. However, the reason i know this is because he is
buried next too my Glasgow ancestors. I was cleaning their stones
a few years ago, and cleaned John MacKays as well since it was in
the same line. it is fairly weather beaten and a bit hard to read.

There are also MacKays interred at Swinton, if i recall correctly?

if my memory serves me right, he was in his thirties and the stone dates
from the late 1700's..not sure though?

Hi aitchscot,

Well this is amazing. Are the Eccles & Swinton you are writing about in Scotland or England.?
The reason I am querying this is because you say John Mackay is interred behind the Kirk. That would suggest Scotland to me.
If it is well I am gobsmacked, because through my Scottish Gt Grandmothers marriage to a Englishman
the family eventually moved to England & settled in Eccles,Lancashire not far from Swinton also in Lancashire.
I myself was born in Eccles,Lancs.

It was very kind of you to clean the gravestone & also even more kind of you to contact me.I will look further into this once you clarify the whereabouts as above. It will be rather difficult as I now live in Spain, but I will most certainly give it a go.

Kind Regards
Betty

Eccles in Berwickshire, scotland. Swinton is in the same county.

I remember the other MacKays at Swinton because, i had been looking at Aitchisons that were not in my line and the MacKay family were intered quite nearby.

there is also an officer called MacKay interred at Edrom. He served with the 78th Fraser Highlanders, so possibly fought alongside Wolf at Qubec
during the canadian war. Edrom is also in Berwickshire Scotland.

Wow,this is incredible.A bit of dejavu going on in this corner of my ancestry.I will definitely have to delve into this some more.Further on is there anyway I could contact the authorities concerning these burials. Is the officer Mackay interred at Edrom in a churchyard or a cemetery?
Firstly I will have a look at the map of Berwickshire. My ancestors in Scotland were also in Caithness.I am ever so chuffed to have Scottish ancestry.

The sad thing is that they are all in my Dads maternal line & he never knew he had Scottish ancestry.

The Alice Mackay who married Kennedy Sinclair is on several Ancestry trees as being born in Ireland. She married Kennedy in Belfast in 1829.
The Alice Mackay who was the daughter of Robert Mackay and Anne Smith married twice. Her first husband was James Fair and they are in Eyemouth in 1841 with their family, including their eldest daughter Anne Smith Fair.
Her second husband was Thomas Fortune and they can be found in North Sunderland in 1861/71/81
