Lost street in Dundee
« on: Friday 26 October 07 04:00 BST (UK) »
Hello all, I'm looking for William Paterson who evidently lived at 3 Elizabeth Pl in Dundee in 1871. Mapquest can't produce Elizabeth Pl, so I guess it's gone. Can anyone tell me where it used to be?

Cheers,

Sorry I don't have time to look for you, but this map may have the answer:

William John Tadden, one of the Spanish Civil War volunteers died at 38 Elizabeth Street, Dundee in 1937.  Wherever it was, it was probably swept away after WWII.

Another slightly different old map:

http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/centlib/maps/map8/main.htm

Much clearer to read when you zoom in.

Also, if you got the census details from Scotlands People, look at the free header page, it may give you some more clues as to the area the street was located in.

Hi China,
Using the above map which Scotmum gave, if you zoom in and scroll to the right you'll come to a district called Maxwelltown.  Elizabeth Street is bisected by Commerce Street and it leads to George Street to the west and Anne Street to the east.  Good luck.

Okay, after much effort I have finally located Elizabeth Street! So...would Elizabeth Place be off Elizabeth Street?

Some of these maps are excellent, much better than what I had been trying to use (Oldmaps). And the library site looks really useful, many thanks!

But Raphael, I have to report that finder.co.uk is really confused...the Elizabeth St in "Dundee" that it gave you is actually in Tayport, on the other side of the river :D
