Thanks very much, Betty, I'll give it a try. It's an impressive website that I'll be exploring more when I have a bit of time.

Hello again China,

Another two e-mail addresses that you could contact about your Elizabeth Place in Dundee. I think the Local History would be the best bet though.

As far as I can make out Elizabeth Place was in the Hilltown area of Dundee, Maxwelltown was multi story house built on this area.

Hi China
Just to add I knew the area well as a child and that the top half of Elizabeth Street, between George Street and Commerce Street (later named Alexander Street) was where Maxwelltown Jute Mill was.  The residential part was the other half which ran between Commerce Street and Ann Street.  The whole area has been sadly swept away and is now covered by the 4 ' Maxwelltown ' multi
story blocks  :'(

William John Tadden, one of the Spanish Civil War volunteers died at 38 Elizabeth Street, Dundee in 1937.  Wherever it was, it was probably swept away after WWII.

According to the post code directory, Eliza Street exists in Dundee. However I would want more evidence before concluding that Eliza Street is the same as either Elizabeth Street or Elizabeth Place.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Googling found someone asking back in 2001 on the RootsWeb Angus-L re St Peter district in Dundee (which, according to the census, is where Elizabeth Place was in 1871).

There was no definitive answer but the impression came across that it was a rather short lived district which began in 1868, and that it was probably named after St Peter's Church - now a Free Church.  That church is apparently located at the junction of the Perth Rd and St Peters St.  You can easily find this spot on a modern map at Streetmap UK - the quickest way to get there is probably to search for Mid Wynd.

Anyway, if the above is correct, you might like to search for Elizabeth Place on the various old maps around that same area.

Good luck!

Eliza Street is in the Stobswell area of Dundee, a wee bit away from Elizabeth Street, just to add that I can't recall an Elizabeth Place being off Elizabeth Street when I lived nearby in the 50's :) Jenc

I have a small Tay FHS booklet  - just 11 pages - "A genealogist's guide to closes, squares, lanes, entries,& ., in old Dundee", but can't see Elizabeth Place in it, sorry.
