Birth Sarah PRINCE
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 17:15 BST (UK) »
According to successive Census records from Seaforth Lancashire, Sarah PRINCE was born in Marchweil, Denbighshire in about 1826.
She married John Ashton, Blacksmith of Seaforth (b.1826 Downholland Lancs) in about 1845 and their first child Jane (or Margaret Jane) was born at Walton-on-the-Hill Lancashire 03 July 1846 (baptism record).
Can anyone help me find the Prince family in Marchweil around the 1820s to 1840s ?
Ashton, Parry, Prince, Hyde, Massey (Merseyside, Lancs, Cheshire/Wirral &  Denbighshire)
Patrick (Yorkshire East Riding)
Maynard (Essex, Middx)
Gray, Washington (Beds)
Albery (Beds & Bucks)

Hello your Highness  ;D ;D ;D

I had an hour to spare so popped into Wrexham Museum to look for you.
Here`s what I found :
St Marcella`s Marchwiel
1823 May 18 Elizabeth Prince d/o Charles  ( lab )and Jane. Marchwiel
1824 Oct 18 Sarah  d/o   ditto Pentre Meilin ( probably this is Pentre Maelor )
1826 Oct 15 John  s/o  ditto  Marchwiel
1828 Mar 9 Margaret d/o ditto
1830 Mar 7 Mary     d/o ditto
1832 Feb 7 Hannah d/o ditto
1834 Apr 20 Caroline d/o ditto
1836 Mar 20 Charles s/o Charles ( gardener) and Jane.

Marriage at St Marcella`s
1823 Mar 17 Charles Prince, Bangor and Jane Davies Marchwiel.

Looking at the date of their first daughter , the wedding dress must have been a bit on the tight side  :o :o :o

St Marcella`s MI`s
Headstone.
Mary daughter of Charles and Jane Prince entered into rest 7 July 1849 aged 19.

Headstone
In affectionate remembrance of Jane the beloved wife of Charles Prince who died Dec 29 1866 aged 66. Also of Elizabeth daughter  of above who died Feb 14 1860 aged 36.
Also Elizabeth beloved wife of David Davies and mother of the above Jane Prince who died Jan 1 1845 aged 70.

The ages of the Price girls matches the dob in the PR`s  and the marriage entry for Charles and Jane gives her as Davies, so this is probably the same family.
There is no mention of Charles in the MI`s.

Perhaps you now need to get the marriage certificate of Sarah and John just to make 100% sure this is the right one, but she was the only Sarah I found in Marchwiel  and the churches close to.

Hope this helps. :)

It looks like Charles was still alive in 1881  RG11 3580/48 page.10
 120 Borough Rd,  Birkenhead.
Henry Marsh 46 b St Helens.bricklayer.
Caroline 46 b Wrexham grocer.
There follows their five  children and then Charles Prince W father in law 81 born Wrexham.
Caroline his daughter matches the date in the PR`s.

In 1871 Charles  71 is living in Marchwiel with daughter Charlotte and his grandchildren Henry E Ashton aged 19 and Sarah E Ashton aged 14
RG 10 5651

1861 Charles is 61
1851 Charles is 51
1841 census for the Wrexham  district is missing.

In all these records his age is consistent and he is born Wrexham.

Thanks so much for taking the time to check this out for us. We would never have thought to go to Wrexham Museum for the Parish Records as Cheshire FHS advised that they would probably only be at Ruthin.

We have not yet managed to find John Ashton and Sarah Prince marriage, and have no idea where it may have happened (somewhere between Marchweil and Seaforth) but at least we are that much closer.

Thanks for that.

It is strange how some sites that give BMD records miss what others show! We have been searching for this marriage in various sites for a long time. Now I think we can start working further backwards with some reliability. GREAT!

Just wondering , have you searched the FULL bmd indexes or just the free ones. I`ve had a look from 1844 to 1847,in the full index  and while there are Sarah Prince`s and John Ashton`s, none of them are in the same place. ??? ???. Does the baptism say ( formerly Prince ) for Sarah.
Most of the early  records in Wrexham cover Denbighshire and are what has been transcribed by the Clwyd FHS, later ones are on micro film.

The son of John Ashton & Sarah (Albert) was born in Seaforth. His Birth Certificate14 Aug 1862 does state that his mother was Sarah Ashton (fromally Prince). The Census records for John & Sarah all say her birthplace was Marchweil.
John & Sarah's first child Jane (or Margaret Jane) was born in Walton-on-the-Hill, 2 Aug 1846, so we presume that they were married some time before this.

Very strange, I`ve looked for a marriage from 1839 when Sarah would have been  16 and up to 1851 when they are described as husband and wife , but have found no match at all.
I guess the only way to see if this is the same Sarah and John married in Chester would be to see their ages.
The Prs for St Johns  would be in Records offices in Cheshire,
At least the census records give enough clues to be sure that Sarah is the daughter of Charles Prince, but as for finding who John Ashton belonged to  ??? ??? ???
In the 1841 census there are d  :o zens of them
