Hi

If you don't have any success with a look up, they do have a typed index on the shelf at Ashford library (upstairs in the reference section) - they might even be able to give you the ref. over the phone :-\ which would help with a look up in the actual census.

Yes, we are following 2 different HARRIS families:

One lot were originally travellers who settled in Sheerness late 1800s and had the donkeys on the beach there for many years.

The other HARRIS line is my husband's family -Folkestone fishemen.

I have quite a lot of interests in Ashford but not PICTON I'm afraid - WILSON, KIRBY, EAST and the others all travellers that settled mostly in the Gravel Walk area later 1800s ie. ROSSITER, BAKER, BEANEY, BARTON, EPPS, LEE, STEVENS, PENFOLD etc..

Best wishes

Here is the family on the 1851 census:
ref HO107 1621 folio 344: Ashford New Town
Charles Picton head mar age 33 hammerman born Herts Berkhamstead
Barbary do wife mar age 27 born Sussex Ditchling
Benjamin Carter visitor mar age 44 spring maker born London
Charles Waller (or Walles) son age 10 scholar born Sussex Ditchling
Elizabeth Picton dau age 7 scholar born do
Phoebe do dau age 4 born Surrey Camberwell
James do son age 2 born do
There isn't a ditto after Charles name, so no real way of knowing if he is Charles Waller, or Charles Waller Picton.
Hope this helps,
xx Carol.

Hi there,
I am new to the site, I have been trying to trace my family tree but with not much luck, not sure if this is because they were travellers but this came up on a search that I did:

My Great Grandfather was William "Donkey or Billy" Harris who ran the donkeys on Sheerness sea front.  My father recently passed away and I have never known much about the Harris side of the family.  After seeing this post it looks like you may have some information on this Harris line.

I can let you know what I have found out, hope you don't mind me asking.

Kind Regards and thanks

Hello birdie345. This is a very old thread and the original posters may not still be active. Perhaps you could post a query on the main Kent board mentioning great grandfather's name and Sheerness in the title. You may well find that someone knows of him.
