Family abandoned for America?
« on: Tuesday 28 December 04 14:06 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for details of Henry Woodiwiss. He was born in Matlock in 1832 and married Sarah Wild on 30th June 1851. They had three children between 1852-1858.

I can find no record of Henry in any UK census' after 1851. 1861 shows Sarah as the head of the family, but married. I have searched for Henry's death but not yet found it in UK records.

I found a connection to someone elses tree, which says that Henry went to America.

I have found a Henry Woodiwiss in the New York census of 1900, the age is right and it shows he was born in England. He's remarried and has two further children. His occupation is recorded as coachman, his also ties in with Henry and Sarah's daughter Margaret, her marriage certificate shows Henry occupation as coachman.

I can looked at 1930 census, but couldn't find Henry. I did find his son Henry F Woodiwiss, who was born in 1868.

Would love to be able to confirm that the Henry in America is my Henry and perhaps find when he died. :'(

Rowen,  Couldn't find the Henry you mention in 1900 NY census.  Was trying to find Wife's name and children --  perhaps wife/kids would appear in later reports.

The Henry I found in 1930 is Uncle in Household of John F. and Anna Riordan in Richmond, NY  -- maybe same info as you already found?

Henry age 60 widower b. in NY    M/F: Eng   Hospital Attendant

Household:
John F. Riordan 32 b. in NY   M/F: NY    Dentist
wife Anna  29 b. in NJ   M/F:  Sweden
dau Marie 6
mother  Henrietta Riordan 56 b. in NY  F:  Eng  M: Ire

Found no other Woodiwiss in NY --  there are some in the Mid West states --  Iowa, etc.
