I have the marriage index reference number for one of my ancestors. Can anyone tell me how to search the number so I can find out who he married

If you can find the marriage in freebmd click on the number and it should give you a page with 2 men and 2 women.
If you are sure of one of the happy couple you can send for the cert. without mentioning the spouse.
If the marriage is after 1912[I think] the spouse's surname will be given.

OK glad to help. I fractured my tibia this morning and am confined to barracks. Queries on Rootschat might help with the boredom! :-\

One way I try to confirm who married who is to look at the next census. Of course this usually only works providing they after 1841 and before 1901.

Doesn't work every time if the person you are looking for has emigrated, re-married or died  :(
