Unfortunately the online serch for Gateshead marriages start at 1845 so I can't see whether it was Hannah he married.

Can't see any other likely ones in the area, Sunderland is a possibility in 1841 but a bit out of the way for  Newcastle/Northumberland

His age in 1841 could be up to 25 as they rounded ages down to the nearest 5  ::)

If you order the cert and specify wife's name you shouldn't have to pay if it's the wrong lady.

Hi

First of all Jno is John similar to Wm for William etc.

The term "Hundred" is an old term used to describe a geographic division and is rarely used these days. The link to Wikepedia is below. This gives an explanation.

Just to make sure that I'm looking at the right family in 1851, is Hannah a Mariners wife and as well as Thomas age 4, there is William age 6 and Charles age 2?
Some births & marriages in Northumberland are online. A John Moore married Hannah Wilson in 1840 at St Andrew, Newcastle. On FreeBMD John's surname is spelt Moor (Sept Qtr 1840) but on the Newcastle Gov site it is spelt Moore. The link below is a link to search the indexes. Its possible that Thomas's birth was registered as MOOR rather than MOORE. There is a Thomas MOOR born 1846 who could be yours. On FreeBMD its Sept Qtr so he would still have been 4 when the 1851 census was taken.

Just to complicate things a little bit more :

The Thomas Moore age 4, is living with mother Hannah age 29, (born Durham, wife of a mariner) and his 2 brothers, William age 6 and Charles age 2, in Byker on 1851 census.

In 1861 census, 4 Smiths Court, Byker, there is a :
Hannah Moore, Head, Widow, age 45, Fruiterer, born Hebron, Durham.
Thomas Moore, son, age 14, born Newcastle,
Charles Moore, son, age 11, born Newcastle,
Alexander Moore, son, age 9, born Newcastle,
Lindre Moore, son, age 6, born Newcastle,
Elizabeth Birril, mother, aged 68, born Barlow, Durham.

In earlier census Elizabeths name is spelt Burrell.

There is a marriage of a Hannah Burrell and a Charles Moore, Newcastle All Saints, Mar 1845.

The John Moore, wife Hannah, in 1841, is a Farmer. There is another John Moore and wife Hannah in 1851 census in Black Callerton, both aged 29, John is a Farm Agent. They have 3 children, but no Thomas.

Alan.
Northumberland - Smith, Willis,
Durham - Rogerson, Child
Cumberland - Irving, Hill
North Yorkshire - Layfield,
Ireland - Collins

Hi Wolfiesmith

On one of MRST's topics from some montha ago it seems that Burrell crops up as a middle name. If that is confirmed then your 1861 family seems likely and possibly Hannah as a Mariners wife in 1851 given that the children. match.

 ;D ;D ;D
Thank you so so much. Yes Hannah was a Mariners wife and all this ties in beautifully. My Great Grandfather was indeed Alexander Burrell Moore and my Mum has the same middle name. No one has a clue where it came from! I am so excited that I now have the answer!Going to phone her now!

With regards to Hannah being the head of the house now in 1861 she must have lost her husband and son , William in the space of ten years. Mind you , he would have been 16 , old enough to leave to look for work perhaps. Anyway chuffed to bits with your info , Thank you one and all you are all fab!!

Mrst :-*
