I've just joined rootschat and am interested in the YATES discussion - my grandmother was Margaret Yates - she was born in the US in 1892 when her father John Yates was a gold prospector there.  He was born in Durham in 1857 - his father, Thomas Yates (1823-1859) was killed in a pit shaft accident.  Thomas was born in Scotland and his father was John Yates (c.1790).  Can anyone add to the Yates story for me?

I have also just joined the forum but my Yates' all seem to come from the London area - I've got stuck at my gggg grandfather Thomas b.1818 Shoreditch.  Are there any other Yates from London - I can't help thinking there must be a northern link at some point as that seems to be where most of the Yates' come from.

I have recently joined Rootschat.   :) I have Scottish Yates (Yeates, Yetts) in my family. My 2nd great grandmother, Mary Ann Yetts (1833-1882) (the family used all variations of the name) was born in Port Glasgow. Her father , James Yates, was a gardener and her brother, John, who moved to the Broughton area of Greater Manchester was also a gardener. John was a landscape gardener at Kersal Dale, Broughton and his widow and sons ran a Garden Nursery. I have more information on my tree which I am willing to share.
