Trying to trace my g g grandfather Richard Summers - any ideas?
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 18:04 GMT (UK) »
My g g grandfather Richard Summers was born about 1844 in Ireland but I have had no luck tracing his family. The information I have is as follows:

He married Lucy Barton (a widow, nee Gower) in Salford Lancs on 15 Dec 1873. On the marriage cert he is aged 29, a blacksmith, his father Williams Sumers (sic) a farmer. They were married in an Anglican Church. (Lucy's first husband only died in 1872 so presumably not a long courtship!)

Richard and Lucy are on the 1881 census in Salford with their daughter Mary Ann (my great grandmother), Richard is listed as born Ireland (doesn't say where). Census ref is RG11/3958 folio 73 p6. I have Mary Ann's birth cert (June 1875) which lists her father as Richard Summers, Blacksmith.

I can't see Richard on any census before 1881, so presumably he arrived from Ireland between 1871 and 1873. He died aged 39 in Salford in 1884 (June Qtr).

Any suggestions where I could look to try and trace his origins would be gratefully received.

Helen
