How can I find where he is buried??
« on: Monday 05 November 07 15:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello there!

I am researching a family called Jardine.

I have a William Jardine who died when two ships collided in the Bristol Channel.  The details are:

13 May 1893 - collision between the Countess Evelyn and the SS City of Hamburg.  He was one of 2 bodies recovered

William was born in 1863 and the only death I can find with the right age and date is in Swansea.

If that is him (I'm waiting for the certificate) how would I go about finding where he was buried?

Any advice is very welcome

Danygraig cemetery opened in 1856 so that seems the most likely place.

All the other municipal cemeteries opened later.

I can check whether he is there - give me a few days.   :)

My memory wasn't working properly last night, because Oystermouth cemetery opened in 1883, so that was also a possibility.

Unfortunately though, after speaking to the supervisors of both Danygraig and Oystermouth, they have both checked and William Jardine is not buried in either of those cemeteries.

It's possible of course that he is in one of the local churchyards, so that would be more difficult.

You say he was recovered from the water - was there a long time between the collision and the finding of his body?

If, when you receive the certificate, you have any further clues let me know and I'll see whether I can help.

Of the other council cemeteries Cwmgelli opened in 1896 and Morriston in 1915, so he's not going to be in either of those.

Good luck!  :)

Hi Bevbee

His body was pulled from the water immediately after the collision - the City of Hamburg picked him up and carried him to Swansea (its destination) where his death was registered (this is all from press cuttings) so his death was registered in the 6 weeks after he died (Q2 1893)

I'm trying to find the grave for one of his descendents so any inspiration you have would be welcome!!

Cheers

Ashley

Any idea where in Swansea he was brought ashore? It might help.

Hi Bevbee

All I know is that his death was registered on the 14 May and that the inquest was opened and adjourned on 15 May eventually being held 20 May in Swansea.  The incident was reported as far afield as New York.

I suspect that such a high profile event might be documented (Swansea Local History Dept have been very helpful) though my firend is not interested in the inquest notes as they may give 'too much' information about the death.

How can I find if he was buried in Newport where his wife was living?

Hi Ashley,

I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to help you with Newport.

I was hoping the newspaper reports would have said where he was found and brought ashore. If that had been a village on the Gower, then finding the grave might have been easier.

If you find any more clues let me know.

Bev.

Hi there, William Jardine was my great great grandfather. I have limited information other than he left behind 5 daughters, one of which was my grandfathers mother and that apparently there were only two bodies recovered, one William and one of a small female child. This caused some confusion as there were meant to be no children aboard, so it was thought she was the child of a crew memeber, or so i was told. I actually own a painting of the vessel countess Evelyn. Are you related to the Jardines?
