I forgot to ask, when you say Nort Uist -what does the Uist stand for? Obiviously, I know very little about Scotland.

The Uists are islands going south from Lewis and Harris, Nannette  :)

In all we call them the Outer Islands or the Long Isle - the Outer Hebrides - info here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Hebrides

The Uists are the southern part of the blue islands

I was in North Uist  3 years ago  :)

Thanx.  Uist is the actual name not an abbreviation.
Neat! How was your trip 3 years ago?  Is it foggy or misty like I have heard? Did you hate to come back home? Take a lot of pix? Meet any of your family?
Would you please explain the census date? There are different ways to read it and I'd like have it correct:
07/04/1861
is it July 4th or 7th of April

Hi Nannette

Its 7th April 1861.

And yes, the islands can be foggy and misty - and cold and wet - and just beautiful too!

They are very exposed to the elements, and it must have been a very hard life for our ancestors.

I have been a couple of times, and loved it.

I come from the highlands myself, from near Inverness, but I am now a "southern softie" having lived in Cardiff, in South Wales, for about 17 years. But I do go home often.

Ellen.

Thanx.
I'd love to visit there. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for our relatives; but I guess when you are born into a way of life you just learn to adapt and don't know any difference.
I'm a real southern softie, I live in Tennessee. I won't even plan a visit to Michigan to visit family in the winter months.  :)
I'm so thrilled with my new information! Thank you again for all your work. I'm trying to find each of the children with their families; and any connections. All this fun is because of your hard work and kindness.

Nannette

When we went over it was early February and the ferry from Ullapool was delayed for 3 hours. It was a hair raising trip to Stornoway but I'm a good sailor. We then drove over to Callanish and Dun Carloway and then down to Harris-  the hilly bit of the Island. Next day we went over to North Uist. it rained, it was cold, it was windy, it was wet, but...........

We had a super time.

When we got over to Skye the weather had blown through and it was brilliant (one of the few times Skye has behaved for me and I've been there many times)

It must have been tough for your ancestors. Mine were soft southerners from Kirkcudbrightshire  :)

The Donald MacDonald mentioned above and married to Flora Nicolson, had the tenancy of 8 Aird nan Sruban for a while but emigrated to Kincardine Twp, Ontario in the 1850s. The information on the family is in Bill Lawson's Croft History for North Uist, Vol 3 covering Griomsaigh and Ronaigh.

The area is a very sensible place to be looking for MacVicars as it is within a few hundred yards of Temple na Trionadh, the late medieval 'college' run by the mac 'a Phiochair family that spun off a number of famous philosophers including, it seems, Duns Scotus.

Good hunting: Angus

Thanx!
This Vol 3 of Bill Lawson's Croft History for North Uist-is that available online or in the library?
I have found that a lot of the MacDonald's and MacVicar's married.
