Death of mountaineer A. Ernest Maylard in Peebles (1947)
« on: Thursday 08 November 07 21:16 GMT (UK) »
A distant ancestor was Alfred Ernest Maylard, a noted surgeon and mountaineer who died in Kingsmuir, Peebles on June 27, 1947 at the age of 93. After thirty years of conducting family research, this is the first relative I have found who was 'well-known' so I am thrilled! I would greatly appreciate any assistance in finding out a)  if there was an obituary in the local paper and if so, how I could obtain a copy of this b) where he was buried c) how I can find out if he left any papers with the local archives d) if there are still any Maylards locally e) does Kingsmuir refer to the name of a village or hamlet?

Many thanks for any help!

Kings Muir (as it is recorded on the OS map) is an area to the south of Peebles town centre and south of the river Tweed.

The Scotsman archive has two items for him in 1947, on successive days.  One may be the announcement of his death and/or funeral and the other may be his obituary.  The site requires payment to view the results of a search - £7.95 for 24 hours worth of access.

Excellent! Thanks so much, Nell. I'll look that up directly. It sounds then as if Kings Muir just be a suburb then and an area referred to locally rather than an established or incorporated town, is that right?

This link may help:

http://www.pagemost.com/Kings-Muir-Scottish-Borders

Also, look at the OS map at:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk

and then do a search for Kings Muir

Kings Muir was a separate place with little development in the early part of the 20th century.  The modern maps show there has been a lot of development and relies on the town of Peebles for most of its services.

Thanks again for helping me out with this, Nell! I have to also express my appreciation once again for the information on the Scotsman online archive and tell you what a great investiment that was. After paying my seven pounds sterling online, I was rewarded not only with Ernest's obit but also that of his wife, his wife's sister and about 15-20 articles written by him or mentioning his connection with one organization or another- even an advert his wife put in for a plain cook- marvellous!

Many many thanks!

I possess a typed and illustrated journal compiled by Alfred Ernest Maylard and his wife Jane in 1905 which may be of interest to you.  This I am currently offering for sale on e-bay and you may like to look at it.  If you search in e-bay against MANUSCRIPT DIARY 1905 REFS TO CHARLES DARWIN'S SON you will find it.

Yours sincerely,

Abergynolwyn
