Rowntree in Hokianga
« on: Monday 12 November 07 20:14 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any info on a Sarah Jane Rowntree, who married Robert Cochrane in 1866.

I see that a Mary Rowntree married a Marriner in the same year, were they sisters ?

The only Rowntree about in those times was a Thomas Stephenson Rowntree from Balmain, who was shipping Kauri spars. Are they linked ?

Looking for parents or links, have a lot of info on Sarah and Robs family.
                                          :)

Read Thomas's bio and he wasn't in NZ long, but definitely a prospect.

Yeah, just found he had a publicans license in the Hokianga in 1966 as well.

Everything points to him being in the area around 1865-66, then he back to Sydney.

Hi Mk2

There’s a Mary MARRINER 1893 Electoral Roll, Bay of Islands

Archives Auckland have 2 Letters of Admin for a Mary MARRINER, Mt Wesley, Mangawhare d. 1 Nov 1895.
One filed 1896 the other 1903.
Might have something of interest….

Bren.

I'll try and concentrate on the Hokianga area for now, they rarely travelled far to find spouses.

There is a Sarah Jane buried in Rawene in 1930, but there was another Sarah Jane Cochrane at same time, his cousins kid married one also.

So if the other Marriner-Rowntree researcher has nothing else, I will order the the 1930 death and hope it has some details.

The thing that gets me is, if Thomas Stephenson Rowntree is the father of those two, he basically married them off and shot thru back to Balmain, Sydney !!!!!

Hi from me...sarah jane and mary were sisters, yes they are both daughters of captain rowntree, yes they married a cochrane and a marriner...no the girls father didnt marry them off and shoot back off to balmain, there is quite a full history for our rowntree family that we are writing about. Yes captain rowntree and his wife annie rowntree (nee ogle) did go back to aussie after a few years. The captain kept his properties for quite a while after going back to australia and one of his daughters and her husband continued living in the captains house, the captain kept coming back and forwards to nz....let me know if you want to chat more as i have a large amount of the family history...ta toni
