Can anyone tell me where Herbert Street is/was in Everton Liverpool. I have a death certificate from 1889 but have been unable to locate the street?

Hi Beatle

Hopefully someone with better local knowledge will come back to you, but in the meantime.. ..

1891 census for Herbert Street places it in District 34, which comprised the area contained by:

Margaret Street, Sykes Street, Mill Road, Queen's Road & Laith Street

If you google "Queen's Road Everton" & click on maps  you can see what remains of the area - Margaret Street, Mill Road & Queen's Road appear to still be there.

Roughly the area between Everton Road, West Derby Road & Breck Road.

Hope this helps

Dear SandraC

Ah that'll be right. I know Mill Road was where the West Derby Workhouse (later Liverpool Infirmary) was situated and I think is still there -  possibly?

Many thanks

Hi Beatle

There's more about the workhouse, Mill Lane, Belmont Road hospital, Newsham General etc here http://www.institutions.org.uk/workhouses/england/lancs/West_Derby_workhouse.htm

With a bit of luck this Streetmap link will work and the arrow will be pointing more or less to the place where Herbert Street used to run from Etna Street/Sykes Street down to Mill Road, parallel to and between Margaret Street and Queens Road.

Thanks Guys you've been a great help. Love the map! the house must have been demolished to make way for the school. My grandad lived in Hughes Street.

Thanks again

My grandfather was born at 1 Herbert Street, Everton in 1892.  His father is listed as Robert Davies/Davis, merchant seaman (born in Bangor) and mother Lucy Anderson Jones.    Lucy is a mystery lady.  I don't think she ever married Robert....she was born Lucy Anderson in Scotland, married a Jones in Kirkdale and then in 1901 married again Edward Hughes, listing herself as widow Jones.  Any other information on the family would be appreciated.
