Cranford BBC1
« on: Sunday 18 November 07 22:17 GMT (UK) »
I've just watched the first instalment of this ... delightful !

And for those with ancestors in 1842, I'm sure the BBC has got it very authentic.   The clothing, the life-style, the manners and social sensibilities ...

It was filmed in Laycock ... on the Cotswolds !  Well worth a visit ... I stopped there by accident one day, on the way to somewhere else, and was enchanted.

I have to agree Lydart, it was delightful  ;D

and such a pleasant change from the usual stuff on the TV, cookery, gameshows or reality celebrity rubbish :D :D :D :D

Imagine how horrifying it must have been though to witness the new medical procedure that to us it so commonplace!  They must have thought it was black magic or something.

Great show, excellent cast;  really enjoyed the first episode, especially the unexpected caller in the evening when an extra candle was lit and more coal on the fire!

As for ladies and funerals; when I first visited Yorkshire in the mid 1960s funeral notices would often state "gentlemen only".   As a Londoner I found this very strange.

Fantasic series, great cast, but can someone please tell me the actor who played the doctor (not the young one) and where have we seen him before.
My husband and I have been trying all evening to place him.
I'm sure someone will beable to tell me

The "older" doctor was in Coronation Street one of the Landlords... later found dead in a derelict house! Trying to think of his name.

I enjoyed the first episode. I had a special reason for watching as OHs ggrandfather was a doctor born 1825, studied in Dublin and came over from Ireland in 1850 to work in London.  I have his journal in which he wrote about the illnesses and some of the surgical procedures he did.  I thought the Beeb did it well, though I do get distracted when they have big named actors/actresses playing the parts.

Cheers, knew I'd get the answer from a Rootchatter.
It's so annoying when you spend the whole hour trying to place actors. Look forward to next weeks episode.
