Castlelyons Parish - Link
« on: Tuesday 20 November 07 04:16 GMT (UK) »
Castlelyons Parish has two beautiful churches at Bridesbridge and Coolagown, and also boasts a Castle, two Abbeys, a Mausoleum, two Holy Wells. Britway National School opened in 1845 and closed in 2005. Castlelyons National School celebrated its fortieth anniversary and the Pipe band celebrated its fiftieth anniversary this year. Thomas Kent who was born in Bawnard House, near Castlelyons, in 1865 took part in the Rebelljon in 1916. He was shot, for his participation in the rebellion, at Cork Jail on 9th May, 1916.  The article about Thomas refers to his brother, David, but doesn't say what happened to him. Leontia Kehoe tells a bit more about him in her article "Thomas Kent of Bawnard - 1916 Leader" which was published in the September 2006 edition of "Ireland's Eye." David was court-martialled and his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment at Dartmouth.
