Hickmans Sussex
« on: Monday 26 November 07 13:12 GMT (UK) »
Please can someone help me find more details of my partners paternal line Hickman in Sussex

i went totally off in the wrong direction last time so i am trying again from scratch but i don't have access to the census this time.

this is what i know to be true:~

William Hickman b. 1881 Beddingham (reg at Lewes) s/o Edward Hickman (b. Glynde) & Mary Rusbridge (b.Lewes) m. Edith Verona J Barnett (b. Q3 1886 Cuckfield) Q4 1908 Cuckfield

i want to work backwards form Edward. i have Edwards father as Richard Hickman. b. 1816 Chiddlingly,  this info. is secondhand and therfore not confirmed according to this sourceof info. Richard married secondly to a Louisa Unknown, i have not been given a name for Richards first wife and therefore Edwards mother.

in a separate branch in my tree i already have a Richard Hickmna b. 1815 Chiddingly s/o James Hickman & Sarah Gander i thought perhaps they were the same person.
Richard b. 1815 crucially had a brother called Edward, and even today the Hickmans are in a habit of naming their children after previous generations.

I have the children for William & Edith ,
Kathleen May
Ivy V S
Leslie I W
Kitty Alice Mary
Donald Edward
Raymond V

I know they were shepherds (at least William was and probably Edward) and lived at Ashcombe House Beddingham which has been demolished to make way for the landfill site.

any help appreciated.

Hi toni

Are you sure that Louisa wasn't the first wife, I had a look at the same family on the 1871 and found a Senga?  Definitely not Louisa.

I will investigate a bit further.

Right think I've found registration of Edward's birth and I was right (see above)

I checked through 1847 to 1854 for Edward Hickman - nothing but then tried Hickmer and found the following:

Hickmer, Edward, 1850 Q - December (which fits with him being 4 months on census)
District - Hailsham, Volume - VII and page 414

thats great you guys  :D no i'm not sure if Louisa was the first wife or not, that info. came to me secondhand and i had not checked it i thought it was strange there was no name for the mother.

do you think Hickmer has been mistranscribed?

added: they are definetly called Hickman now  ;D
