Yes - so have the ones that I know - some are in Bristol and some are in New Jersey  :)

I've just checked MIs for Kells, Dalry and Balmaclellan but can't get anything on a George - only one was a minister  :-\

In the 1851, James is still there, aged 35,unmarried,  ag lab, b. Kells. At Fintloch, there is a Mary Murray, age what looks like 40, unmarried, housekeeper, also b. Kells.

Thanks Gadget - my James definitely died (according to his MI) in 1843.

It's interesting that Mary is at Fintloch - I'll have a look at her via SP.  Thanks again.

Are you trying to link them to George - where were their last known residences, etc.

Hi again Gadget

No I'm not necessarily trying to link them to George the Blacksmith.  As The Township of Green Law is relatively near Shiel I was just hoping....! The IGI has James born in Balmaclellan in 1811 - as was supposedly his wife.  As he died in 1843 and can't be pinpointed definitely in 1841 he remains my very big brick wall.  Throughout all two sons' and a daughter's marriage certificate and his widow's death certificate (on SP) he is mentioned as a blacksmith/smith - unfortunately for all three children their certificates neglect to mention that he is deceased so that sidetracked me for some time!!!!

He died at Green Lane, near Dalbeattie, which had a blacksmiths at the time - now long gone.  I assumed that because he was so young when he died - 28 years - he would have been doing his journeyman's time before being an independent smith.  As blacksmithing tended to stay in the family I was looking to find a blacksmiths at or around Balmaclellan with the name Murray.  There are none.  His children unfortunately have no distinctive names and their mother's family share the christian names so that is no help either.  I've looked at the local papers for that time to see if he is mentioned as a victim of an accident or infectious disease but can find none.

Unfortunately also I cannot definitely pinpoint his family in the 1851 census though I have a strong hunch that they are dispersed and working in separate areas.  His widow's birthplace seems to suit the census parish and I again presume that this reflects that she is perhaps receiving poor relief.

As you can appreciate I have been around and around and around this issue for three years now - Ooohhhhhh!

Thanks again J.A.

Trying to find his MI in Urr (Dalbeattie) - so far not found - was he buried there or elsewhere  :-\

And nothing on SP for a bpt. Balmaclellan in 1811 - was it a patron submission  :-\

there is a Margaret, bpt Balmaclellan 1814 - parents John Murray and Agnes manson

The only James Murray that SP is showing bpt. KKD 1811-1814 is

21 Dec 1811 in Kirkmabreck. parents - Matthew Murray and Janet Thomson.

Is the IGI one the patron submission showing a James Murray who married an Elizabeth Shaw? The Shaws were definitely Balmaclellan.
