Good morning to you Linda,
Many thanks for looking that up for me,
The idea of there being an older brother William is 'cause on the 1871 census John 36 has William living with him, shown as 'brother' I did at first think that maybe William could be at sea, but that is silly as he is shown in 71 as being a Millwright, thinking about that, I guess it is possible that he was living with a Miller, learning the trade. The rest of the family all followed sea/water careers, generally bargemen. In 1861 when Samuel marries, his father is shown as Master Bargeman, Samuel is shown as Bargeman, John is later recorded as a Mariner, and on his children's marriage certs as 'Master Mariner'
I had no idea of a Henry, and can only presume that he did not make it into adulthood.
I have, this morning sent off for the 1851 & 1861 census floopy discs from the Essex FHS, so may be able to find out if Henry made it that far.
I am actually trying to find out where the father, William 40 in 1841 came from, the family story tells us of him running away from home, fed up with being 'waited on' (I wish!!) and with possibly having a scottish accent, Notes from my G. Aunt who died about 1960, Oh that she was still with us to tell me more.
Many many thanks for doing this for me
Happy New Year to you and yours
Londy
