where can i go from here?
« on: Monday 03 December 07 10:12 GMT (UK) »
I have found that my 4 x great grandparents came from Ireland.  Their names were Henry Kinney b around 1800 and elizabeth mckenzie, born around 1805.  They moved to scotland around1820.

Elizabeth died in 1864 and her father is recorded as John  Mckenzie, spirit dealer and her mother as Mary Coyle.

I wa wondering if anyone knew how i could trace further back?
thanks, Caroline  :)

You won't be able to trace the family in Ireland without knowing where they lived (parish, if not townland, not just county). You will also need to know what religion the family would have been and even then there's a chance that the church records will not have survived that far back.

Hi Caroline,

What denomination were your Kinney fcamily?

Your Kinney family may well have come from Loughguile in Co. Antrim. I looked at the 1796 Spinning Wheel Census (Flax Growers List) on John Hayes failteromhat.com website. There were only three Kinneys listed in the whole of Ireland.

Daniel Kinney, Loughguile. Antrim
John Kinney, Loughguile. Antrim
George Kinney, Loughguile. Antrim

There were also a few McKinneys but they only appeared in Antrim, Donegal, Leitrim and Tyrone

Come forwards to go backwards sometimes works. Although your ancestors left Ireland around 1820 some relatives may have remained in Ireland. Irish Ancestors Surname Search shows that Belfast city is the only area in Ireland where both McKenzie and Kinney households are recorded in the same parish in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64. It looks as though your ancestors may have moved from Loughguile to Belfast.

The 1861-2 Valuation shows only four Kinneys in Co. Antrim ... two in Loughguile and two in Shankill ...

John Kinney, Drumrankin, Loughguile. Antrim
Sarah Kinney, St. George's Ward Townparks, Albert St Pl., Shankill. Antrim
Alice Kinney, Drumrankin, Loughguile. Antrim
Sarah Kinney, St. George's Ward Townparks, Albert St Pl., Shankill. Antrim

Kinney can also be written as Kenny as well as McKinney.

44 people with the Kinney surname and 157 named Kenny signed the Ulster Covenant.

familysearch.org shows 231 matches for Kinney and spelling variations and 333 matches for Kenny.

1861 Belfast and Ulster Directory - Belfast section
(The 1861 Directory is on the Lennon Wylie website)
Bernard Kenny, spirit dealer, 7, Curtis Street.
Felix Kinney, grocer and spirit dealer, 11, Durham Street.

right,

I've just looked at Hugh Kinney's marriage in 1850 and it took place in the Roman catholic chapel.

is that the right information?

I don't have any of the others marriages and i haven't been able to find any baptisms either

Have you found a death in Scotland for Henry?/Hugh? Kinney?- might give his parents' names, etc.
