1813 birth
« on: Friday 26 March 04 11:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know where on the web i can find details of a 1813/18 birth. I'm looking for Joseph Furmedge who married in liverpool in 1872 to Annie Eliza Crummey, and died in liverpool in 1891 aged 73/78. I don't actually know where he was born, free bmd but it's a bit early for them. All ideas gratfully received.
Thanks
Ange  ???

Hi there Ange

You wont find information on a birth befoe 1837 - the start of civil registration.

But what you will find is a baptism in the church registers, and very often they also put the date of birth when they baptized the child.

You say you do not know where he was born, but as he died in 1891 - he should be on the 1841, 51, 61, 71 and 81 census returns which give a place and county of birth.

That is the first place to look and hopefully find relevant information

Hi Ange

Looking on the International Genealogical index, the surname Furmedge appears mostly in Dorset with a few in Hampshire.
There are a couple of possibilities for your Joseph

JOSEPH FURMEDGE - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 27 NOV 1812 Swanage, Dorset, England

25. JOSEPH FURMAGE - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 10 JAN 1819 Netherbury, Dorset, England

Is there a reason why you do not know his exact age at death – you say 73/78, where did you get this information from?

Please give me as much info as you can in order that i may be able to help you further

Hi Pauline and Chris,
Thanks for the replys, Pauline this is definately him as i know of his 3 son and his considerably younger wife. :o :o
Chris, I didn't know where he was born as they seem to be the only family of furmedges in liverpool and i couldn't find him on the census. So i thought he may have been from dorset/hampshire area. As for his age the death index has him in twice - once aged 73 and once aged78. I am now hoping to find his 1st marriage and maybe a birth/christening for him.
Thank you both so very much for your help
Ange ;D ;D

Hi Ange,  Furmadge's and variants are listed on the Vital Records Index CD which I have, from the 1600's in Dorset through to the 1800's. One listed in York. The name Joseph is prevalant so that's a good clue as they passed names down through the years.

Also I can send you the complete record from the 1881 census cd, if you'd like to contact me.

Shirl

Hi Shirl,
Thanks for the offer but i actually have the entry for him in 1881, he's in liverpool with his wife and sons. What i can't do is find him before that as i really don't know how old he was. His marriage certificate says he was 44 in 1872 but the 1881 census says he was 70 and his age at death was 73 in 1891. :-\
The only thing I do know is that his fathers name was Richard and he was a joiner, I'm going to liverpool records office next week so i'm going to check the original marriage entry to check his age and the 1861/71 censuses for him.
Thank you anyway for your kind offer
Ange
