Hi Tilly,

The proper title is the Phillimore Marriage Registers, I happen to have the one for Gloucestershire. Not all parishes are covered but an awful lot of them are :)

I have Clutterbuck's (and no it's not catching  ::))

Emily Rachel Clutterbuck born Notting Hill 1877 to William Clutterbuck and Charlotte nee Walsham married my gt grandads brother Frederick James Rogers in 1900.

I have followed William's line back through 2 further generations of William's.

Hi Tilly

You may have already looked but if you put Cliffords Frampton in Google search engine there's lots of history on the Clifford family, may give you a link to yours.

Regards

Hello Carol and Susan

Many thanks for your replies.  I have googled Cliffords of Frampton, but unfortunately I can't find out anything more than I already know.............which isn't a lot!

What I'm hoping is that a Clutterbuck is going to recognise the names in my thread (see the long reply I made to Toni! :D) and will say - "That's great-grandfather Clutterbuck" and then I'll be fixed!

I don't suppose you recognise them do you, Carol? :-\...............

But everything helps - so thank you again very much for your help.

I know this thread is from a while ago but it came up in a search for Clutterbuck.
That is an interesting story - did you ever learn more?
My husband is a descendent of Clutterbuck’s.
Interestingly I have traced back to a James Clutterbuck who married a Mary Clifford on the 5th August 1780 in Newent, Gloucestershire, England.
They had sons John, Thomas, James, George and Joseph (plus daughters) born from 1783 to 1805 all at Newent. Perhaps a little old to be your marriage witnesses, but it seems these names repeat in each generation.

If your story is true, did they marry to keep any wealth within the family?

Good morning Ray
I didn't even remember posting this question.... right at the beginning of my research into my family history!
I do now know where the name Clutterbuck fits into my Clifford family - the "Bessie Clutterbuck" I mention in the post was my Great Grandmother. However, her real name was Elizabeth Serena Brimfield and she married Herbert Clifford. Elizabeth's mother was Bridget Brimfield née Seton. Bridget's husband, Compton Brimfield, died young (when daughter Elizabeth was just 16) and  remarried to a Joseph Clutterbuck! So that is why Elizabeth was always known as Bessie Clutterbuck.... However, she always used her real surname of Brimfield/Clifford on BMD. I suppose it was a "family thing" to use the more exciting name (at least I think "Bessie Clutterbuck" is more exciting ;)
As to the links to a noble family.... Having gone back many generations in my Clifford tree, I think that was wishful thinking on my mother's generation's part! I haven't found any relatively recent direct connection, maybe something several generations back, but not enough to move into the stately home, unfortunately!!
And as to the family wealth..... it was also always said in the family that Bessie Clutterbuck was responsible for delapidating the family money when she emigrated to South Africa and spent it all on lovers, gin and horse racing --- which I now know is somewhat unfair! She did have a very interesting life, but sad, too, poor Bessie!!
Kind regards
